Default Oil Pan Bolts - FWIW

I realise this is a known routine maintenance check however noticed a very small spot of oil just below the sump. Jacked the car up and crawled under to inspect and noticed that the bottom of the sump was slightly moist with a fine cover of oil. Like a fine mist. Couldn't see anything obvious so thought I would check the bolts that hold the sump to the bottom of the engine. Well I have heard how regularly these bolts can become loose but could not believe how loose mine had become. Had my service shop nip them up about 20,000km ago. Anyway several of the bolts you could almost tighten up initially with your fingers. So I went around and nipped up the bolts and will monitor for any further oil staining/sweating.

Cheers

I noticed mine were real looses while replacing out a clutch slave....now there is a small sweating where the car never never leaked any fluids prior to tightening them :-(

You might try installing some tabbed lock washers to see if the bolts are actually working loose or the cork gasket is giving way due to age (or both) .....

I just completed my yearly service and I slightly nipped up the engine sump pan bolts and I have minimal to no leakage. I still have the original cork gasket fitted and I have no oil leaks from any system that leaves any oil drops on my garage floor.

A yearly check procedure and a "little nip in time" can take care of most leaks.

Overtightening will damage the cork gasket and lead to more leakage. One or two fingers on a small 1/4" ratchet is plenty of torque.

Thanks Alan and Wally. Yep that's all I did just a couple of fingers anbd slight pressure to nip up the bolts without over tightening. This had been, until recently, quite dry and oil free so I gues the bolts had worked sufficiently loose to allow some "sweating" of oil. Anyway will monitor and see if it reoccurs. BTW, I am talking a very small spot of oil on the pavement so nothing to be anxious about.

Thanks everyone.
Cheers
