I can start a new thread. May have time this weekend. In the meantime I have a couple sets of both speakers and adapters on hand that will fill the 84-88 square-grill cars.
Thanks

There are a couple test sets out, but still waiting for user installed pictures.
Here are pictures of the adapter, and how they assemble. I also made adapters to hold 2-way component speakers.
Thanks

Hans, I somehow missed these. I'm interested in the speakers and the spacers for my '88. Lemme know what you need.

Hans,
Can you clarify the possibilites for '89 and later cars? Would the earlier adapters work if the grills are replaced with the earlier square ones? Or could a handy DIYer cut these adapters down to work with the newer grills? Finally, how many pre-orders would you need to make adapters for the '89 and later cars?
Thanks,

Tom,
I think that would be a conversation for another thread, but to summarize there is no easy way of installing and aftermarket speaker in the 89+ "round grill" cars. It requires destructive modification, and as there is no real precise way of doing that operation, any adapter I make may or may not work with those modifications, so would rather not sell anything I know may not fit properly.
The only real way to get aftermarket speakers in the back of the 928 would be to have new grill shells tooled. Last time I had an injection mold die made, I had to commit to 1000 pieces and the tool was around $2000. As the left and right are different, it would require two tools. So even if the grill only ended up costing $2.50/piece FOB china, I would need to order $5000 worth of grills, then $4000 worth of tooling, and then sea freight to the US (factor another $500 or so).
So $9,500 for rear grills. Assuming I could sell 50 sets, which I doubt I could, to break even, it would be $190/set.... so not likely going to happen anytime soon.
3D printing is getting more affordable, so maybe in a year or so the quality will be high-enough and the price reasonable enough to go that route.
Regards,
Hans

A stereo shop made a plywood ring for my 90 GT that allowed a deeper speaker to be installed with the stock round grills and no modifications to the car. Was about an inch thick and they covered it with vinyl that matched the interior perfectly. Sorry, don't have any pictures.

I was waiting for some more feedback from the innitial testers to make sure that this solution is up to par before making them widely available. I dont have a good car to test with here, both mine are 89+.
I anticipate a price around $150 for the adapters and a pair of SWS-6.5, but that may change if I need to modify the bracket design or include additional items in the "kit".
Thanks
