Rent a mail box in Vegas, with a forwarding service. Have it registered in Nevada with classic plates, (87) and earlier, no smog test required.

I think the 1978 models are pre-smog (IIRC it's 1979 or 1980 where they start looking). Get a roller, drop in your monster engine, done. Of course you would have to upgrade all the brakes and suspension, etc, but that would be legal 100%...

It's 1976, unfortunately.

Cali is erratically diligent on picking up chronic out-of-state visitor cars or cars that 'stay too long'. Nearby Oregon has no sales tax and very low annual license fees, so many who have motor homes and other specialty part-time-use vehicles start off with Oregon registration. But... If you live in Cali more than six months out of the year -OR- more than 90 days (IIRC) -OR- keep your driver's license here, you are 'required' to register the car here. Interesting cars seen regularly in a Cali location are potential victims.

We bought a vacation/retirement home in Oregon last year, and I'd think seriosuly of moving the registration on the cars there because it's so much less per year. Insurance is way less too. But not willing to put up with Cali harassment here with the foreign plates on it when we are here. Guess we may need to actually move there I guess.

Is your average smog shop worker going to even notice that there is a supercharger hooked up to the car? As long as the numbers come out and you have a cat hooked up would they notice? If they ask say its the air pump.

Tony, has a twinscrew blower on his 87 S4, and just registered it with classic plates. I know cause I told him, after my smog guy told me to get'em for my Aero Coupe.

Ya just need a legal Nevada address. Rent a box from a mail box joint that uses suit numbers instead of box numbers, and has a forwarding service. Lots of guys did it here in Clark County. They rented boxes in Nye County to beat the smog test crap. BTW Nevada just changed the requirements, for classic plates.
Made it real easy, and up'd the milage to 5000 a year, but they only ask you how many miles you drove, they don't check. Ya need Nevada insurance, that's easy.BTW this is Vegas, there are time shares up the wazoo here.

Same thing in most counties in Arizona. My county has no smog check. Maricopa County (Phoenix) does.

I just think some random 19 yr old smog testing person who has never seen the underside of a 928 hood before would not notice a modest supercharger sitting under there. I do like the Vegas idea though...

Thanks all for all your suggestions folks.

The Nevada idea sounds like an option but a bit of a hassle to go thru just to keep an SC 928.

If I do move forward, I may just remove it for smog check once every couple of years. Sounds like there are some kits that are easy to remove and re-install. I've read on other posts the Rotrex kits are fairly easy.

Ya..I think I did a thermostat in about 90min, which was removing the rotrex, and then reinstalling it.
