Default Help need pre-purchase critique: 1982 928

I need some good opinion from everyone being I have no idea about the price range vs quality (looking for first porsche)

I dont know if the price is alright for this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...item460d6a01a7

In short body looks good but windows and interior likely needs some work.

Needs Replacement but he has the replacement part:
new rear hatch glass
rear quarter window
new clutch slave cylinder

Self Replacement:
interior carpet needs a dire replacement.
Door interior needs to be fixed
Likely new tires (its flat in the back)
Also likely needs a flush, then clean out the carbs and the tank.
new battery

Likely undriveable condition being that tire in the back looks flat and negelected, hence his mention that it needs a trailer.

Not counting the normal flush of all fluids, carbs and tank cleaning.

What would be your price that you think that it should be?

Also on CL. Other more savvy people will likely weigh in, but for 3g's (obviously just asking price), but I have seen much better cars available here and for sale elsewhere.

So no good then, would that be a $1500 car? (how i see is he is trying to get back his $$$ from his purchase and the upgrade parts)

What is sad is that most dealerships in Southern Cal are asking min of 5k-9k for an automatic which then screws up everything else. Likely I need to look across the country for the 1986 year that I really want.

Huge difference between an '82 and an '86. Be patient and find the right car. Prices are low enough that you probably can find an '86 for the same price.

Virtually any 928 is going to need work. I tell everyone the same thing. Plan on spending 5-10K to make the mechanicals reliable and safe. Paint and interior cost extra.

Dealerships? You don't need no stinkin' dealership. I bought my 1985 5 speed here in Socal for less than the car you posted. Check on here and CL everyday and you will find a good one. I am a sucker for projects, but the wise 928 buyer holds out for the most complete and maintained car.

Forget about this offering.
To much not shown.
To much evident.

Got it, I will keep looking at the LA; OC and SD craigslist and keep my eye out on this fourms for any good deals.

I know it will take some elbow grease to fix most cars up to drivable standards, been reading the repair/diy fourms both here at Rennlist, 928OC; and Porsche928Fourms and other 928 websites.
I likely have to do tons of cleaning and polishing to make everything shiney

Read New Visitor Post by Randy at top of first page.
You must have a PPI done by a 928 Guy - a Rennlist Guy.
Looking shiney is the easy 1% of owning a 928.

in addition to what everyone else already said, study this model well before buying one, to make sure you know what you are getting into. For instance, a 928 does not have carbs. They were all fuel injected, and over the years the systems changed.
If you are not handy with a wrench, then spend more money and buy one that is fairly well sorted, and use an experienced 928 mechanic for the regular maintanence.

Oh right, keep forgetting this isnt a 914 (I was originally thinking of the 914 before I realized I prefer comfort)

Sadly it is an automatic, or I would have called them instantly.

All 914s were fuel injected also....

Some got converted to carbs by owners, who couldn't figure out how to make the fuel injection work.

I loved my 914 but it is an entirely different car. Put 350 rwhp HP in a 914 and you have the track car of your dreams. Put 450rwhp HP in a 928 and you have the street car of your dreams.

There's been a blue 86 on CL lately in LA or Inland Empire for $6k that looks nice, or on Ebay user pebbleandrock has had a couple nice examples. Couldn't vouche for their condition, but they looked nice and I had talked to the guy about a Turbo Coupe T-bird he had last year when I lived in Chino Hills. He seemed pretty legit and knowledgable about his cars and is located in San Diego.

Good luck. Keep looking and be patient...you'll find something that fits your situation.
