Depends which Chevy motor you replace it with. IMO anything after (and including) the 1990 ZR1 engine trumps the 928 engine.

The new LT1 coming out with the C7 is an amazing motor.

Drop in a L98 with a carb..yea, waste of space.

The 928 engine was never allowed to reach it's full potential (be it politics, gas crisis etc....) so further developing it now is very costly. Much easier (and cheaper) to go with a modern engine. The 928 chasiss is complimented with more power at less weight.

Historically, great chassis have seen a mix of engines. Be it McLaren, Lotus, Lola etc..... To me this isn't any different.

I love the 928 engine and don't plan on doing a swap any time soon (I prefer boost, more power than most "off the shelf" chevy's will produce). I have been considering a LS motor in my 944S though.

If it's done properly.... the LT1 is a powerhouse, it's downfall is the Opti-crap ign. system. The clutch is limited to 10.5". Also it is ironblock and has head cooling issues.... and aftermarket parts are more expensive. Better off doing/buying an LS based truck 5.3 or 6.0 even if going iron-block.
