928 Gratitude

David,
As so many have stated - WELL WRITTEN, and even better thought!!! I fully agree, and am somewhat jealous right now of your drive that initiated your comments. We've had a very cold winter, and my GTS hasn't been started in 4 weeks, hasn't been out of the hobby garage where I do maintenance in over 3 months. Today is going to be beautiful, finally over 45 degrees - scheduled for nearly 70. Unfortunately, too many other things today so it will sit in the garage all day. Whole week is supposed to be good, so MAYBE!! But, rain is forecast as well, so it might have to wait a bit longer.
Looking forward to driving it again soon even more after your post.
Cheers,
Gary--

What is truly amazing about these cars is that the design is timeless. Let's not forget that Tony Lapine penned this car 37 years ago!, and yet it remains fresh and effervescent. That's the mark of great design.
Tony Lapine was born in Latvia, and led the Porsche design studio for over 20 years. He was a dear friend of David E. Davis Jr. Of Car & Driver/Automobile magazine fame. I spent a dozen years working with DED, and David respected Tony not only for his innate sense for trend setting design, but his passion for America. Tony's favorite meal during his visits to the US?: a cheeseburger washed down with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Now you know....

928 Gratitude
Just read David's posting, it should be required reading for ALL Porsche owners. The only thing I can add is:
" AND ON THE 8TH DAY GOD MADE THE 928 "

Three Wheelin'
This weekend I'm in Williamsburg, VA. That's about 380 miles from my house. I got in the car yesterday at 5am and was here by 11:30 and felt great.
I love 'tunnel-blasting' through the Baltimore tunnel on the way down, people probably thought I was nuts, but I love that sound!
Have to find a car wash this morning because the car is a mess (it was raining when I left Jersey), then about 3 this afternoon heading back up.
700+mile round trip in two days=some quality time with my car.
How many other people with a 28+ year old car can say that? (ok present company excepted)

Very well written tribute. I, of course, love my old 928, and enjoy when people give it complements. Most of my friends and colleagues have no knowledge of 928's but they enjoy looking at the car, and hearing it is always something special. One guy in a parking lot said it sounds like a Harley. Maybe some truth, but it really sounds like nothing else.

Drifting
I was at a 'cars&coffee' last year and a young kid (20s) with a brand new Beemer asked me how it was on gas. I told him I don't really care. I took him for a short ride and then he said "Now I know what you mean" When I got it last July, I called my sister and told her it didn't have a radio. She said 'I know you, You'll drive it for years without one because you like the sound of the pipes". It's been a year and a half and guess what--Still no radio!!! You can have your screaming 4 bangers and your turbo V-6s. There's nothing like the THUD of the V8 in the front of a 928!!

I got to a weekend event called Supercar Sunday where people literally show up in anything. I eve met Bruce Jenner yes that Bruce Jenner and he even likes my car.
I get people looking around the car to see where the engine is (if I don't open the hood first ) and then they even ask if it is the stock engine.
I get looks from everyone there because of the way it sounds (a nice smooth V8 burble vs. all of the noisy muscle cars) and it's smooth shape that they have never seen before or remember it as the car of their dreams. People just generally like it and wonder what year it was made and when I tell the 1981 they get shocked and can't believe it, that is how timeless these cars are.
Even though half of my interior is out (every 100lbs +1/10 ) I get compliments. People just love the look of these cars today and that just shows how timeless the design is.

Still Grateful
Started this thread about ten years ago. Been driving the 928 the last fews days and it all comes back again. That same feeling. Get out of the car and can't help looking back at it as I walk away. It's different than anything else. Especially the lines as it sits there ready to go, sleek looking, low and fast! A time machine from the past with a design that endures even today. It raises eye brows wherever it goes. People speed up to see what it is, but can't quite figure it out. They know it's special. It's got long legs; they can see it's a machine for the highway! They are in the parking lot checking it out when you come out of the store. They are not ready for the V-8 surprise or the armrest that swings out, or seeing the POD and steering wheel move in unison, or an air-conditioned glove compartment! It's special in so many ways. It looks fast just sitting still, and it shines on the highway. What's that line from the Harry Bosch TV series, "I've got a feeling that I can't let go..." For me, that's the "928 feeling!"
Tony Lapine and Wolfgang Mobius built something that still endures.

You are absolutely correct. I can not forget a young boy on traffic light, when open the window and ask me when Porsche plans to bring this car on production!

Fun read!
One of my favorite journalists said "The 928 I a car you could drive straight through Hell - come out the other side and say, "Was it warm in there?"
Love em...
I've been totaling up the miles I have put on my various 928's - Too many and NOT ENOUGH!
Going to take a couple of them out for some exercise tomorrow.
