928 Gratitude
No special reason for this post other than to express some "928 gratitude."
Been driving the 928 for the past week and it all comes back to me. It's that 928 feeling again! This car is just different in so many ways. It makes you feel different and to also think differently when you are driving it. You notice things you'd never notice in other cars.
It's the sound the door makes when it closes...solid, substantial, enduring. And the sound the starter makes when it cranks; it's just different and unique to the 928. Then there is the deep "lum, lum, lum" sound when it sits there idling; again, different from other cars (yet unmistakable if you are a 928 owner). Then, of course, there is the Bwaaaaaaaaah sound when the right foot is exercised. Very different from other cars, yet recognizable by anyone familiar with 928's.
It looks different too. You can see that it's from the past, but it looks futuristic at the same time. Get down low and look at that profile, side or quarter view; it's like no other car. It could be a rocket or missile, but it is a 928 instead, and it's totally different than other cars.
You sink down in those seats, the pod adjusts, the armrest swings out, and you ride in smooth comfort with the A/C on in a grand touring machine. It's essentially a performance cocoon designed to get you where you want to go in whatever fashion you want get there, with the least amount of stress possible. The 928 is different.
Then there is the effect it has on other people. It's so different, they don't know what to make of it. They ask, "is that a Ferrari" (from two guys who walked up yesterday), or "it's a new one isn't it" (from a lady in the parking lot). It's just different. So different, in fact, that you can see from the looks on their faces that there is a failure to communicate (effectively) when you say it is 25 years old.
After every drive, when you step out of the car (only speaking for myself here) you feel different too. It's a 928 thing, and you can't seem to find it elsewhere. At least I can't.
We are fortunate to have this car, the 928, with all of its nuances, complexities, differences and challenges to experience to the fullest and to benefit so much from this great community of 928 owners.
Just expressing a little 928 gratitude today.
Thanks,

Thanks for that. It pretty much nails it.
There's a special thrill when the starter cranks. And a chill runs up my spine when it fires up.
It sounds like a V8, but different somehow. I can't pin it down, but it's definitely there.
I still walk to the end of my driveway, and turn back to see it sitting there (I usually back in). There's nothing quite like it.
I've had my 944 for 8 years, and it's kinda similar. But way more intense.
I've had the 928 since January, but have only had it out on the road since last Friday.
I haven't had too much chance to get reactions, but my mom thinks its beautiful (she's 75).
And on the first "shake-down" cruise, as I was turning the corner at the end of my block, 2 boys, maybe 10 or 12, shouted out "I like your car!!!"
That was cool.

Mine's been a DD for 8+ years. I got a smokin deal on a Honda Pilot, and I've been driving that to and from a project that 90 miles from home. Early this week I took the 928, and was rewarded with that great feeling that comes with driving a car that just loves to push miles of asphalt past the tires at a brisk rate. Effortless romp over Tejon Pass twice in a day, passing cars struggling to "make the grade".
Thanks for the great note, and enjoy your 928 every chance you get. It's meant to be driven!

One of the directors for the company I work for thought it was a Ferrari and commented "Joe (my CEO) must be paying you real well"..

Very well put. A V8 can make such a great sound in an old muscle car, a new european, or the 928's mix of both. There was a little hill before a long downhill section where I used to live. Nothing sounded so smooth and powerful going up that little hill or could burble down that hill as well as the euro's exhaust. Nothing. Watching one of Jay Leno's video's the other day reminded me of that great sound, he couldn't get over the sound being made by a 1932 Alfa replica even though he owns and has driven everything.
Sound means a lot, and you mentioned so many of them. Lots of nice cars around, I just saw a brand new aventador being prepped for delivery (and a lot of other top cars) but I want my 928. It's like the veteran that can still play and they are so rare.

Nice write up, very well said.
A couple years ago I showed up at my GFs house in the 86.5 (stock exhaust with RMB) and she said “I heard you coming five blocks away”. I said “it’s not that loud is it?” She said “no, but there’s nothing else around here that sounds like it”.
