Cooling efficiency: 87-up Cooling fans in '83 S?
Is changing my fan out for the S4 type a worthwhile (or possible) upgrade? Here in NC it is about to get HOT.
I'm commuting in my 1983 ~65 miles a day and in 85-degree heat yesterday I was already having minor issues in heavy stop and go traffic. Temp gauge was about a needle width from the red with a/c on. I turned a/c off, rolled down windows and cranked the heat. That took care of it - once I was moving again temp went WAY down quickly.
I did a search here and sounds like the fan clutch is a likely suspect.
Currently I'm running 50% Prestone and 50% distilled water. I'm going to do a coolant flush next week and maybe go for 30% Prestone + distilled and a bottle of water wetter.
Thanks!
David

Fan clutches can be refilled with silicon, but results are patchy. Very expensive to replace. Go electric is best as long as your alternator is up to it. S4 fans will do it, depends on the cost - check the 2 x 11" SPAL set at thefanman.com

Drain coolant and remove the radiator. Then use compressed air to blow out all the dirt, dead bugs, leaves, etc from the radiator fins. Blow from rear to front. Prepare to be impressed by huge cloud of crap blown out. You can also blow out the a/c condenser at the time (still in car of course). All this should drastically improve air flow and cooling. Worked wonders on my old '79 928.

Is a used fan clutch worth the savings?
Thanks Richard and danglerb...blowing out the crud was on my list for next week so thanks for the confirmation.
Is a used fan clutch worth the savings? 928 Intl has used for $150 and I think new is $650.
