hard to add to these posts.

once I reached a point of making good money, decided I deserved a nice sports car.

growing up in the peak of the American muscle car era, initially thought Corvette.

long story, but ended up buying a 911 Targa. still have it, sold and bought back. morphed into a harsh DE track/street car so decided I 'needed' another DD sports car. although I love to drive the 911, it is not really a great DD even in stock trim.

by this time I had grown to appreciate the 928. after lurking on this forum for some time, I finally got my US '84 auto about 5 yrs ago. over the time I have owned it I have refreshed lots of stuff. and in that time it never left me stranded. I would now get in to drive to CA without worries.

comfortable, fast, classy looking, great V8 roar with the headers and 3' magnaflow exhaust. I really do not believe you can come close to matching a 928 for the $$$.

LOVE IT.

although I got an 87 944S I resurrected and refreshed for my bro-in-law. and decided to retire my 911 from the track and revert to stock appearance. and found an 86 944turbo project car that will become my new track car.

although I love driving the 911 and expect the 944turbo will be fast and a lot of fun.

I suspect the 928 will remain my preferred DD

I want a street rod.

I want cars that glimmers in the sun, and whose curves make me drop my jaw every time I see them ... even if it is everyday.

I want enough power to outrun any and all Chevy pickups that try to forge past me when I'm entering a freeway.

I want enough power to take a spot in the fast lane next to me, when I turn my blinker on, and not be outgunned by the guy way back there who thinks a lane change signal means "close ranks".

I want leather all around me, and if I can have leather underpants, that too.

I want a car that sticks to the pavement like bubblegum. even though it's 3500lbs. and outbrakes anything else out there. especially when I've dropped the ball and have to correct for my own stupidity.

I want a rear-end that will get down onto its haunches around a decreasing radius turn. not slip out when I lift the throttle to slow down or just because I like the whine of deceleration.

I want to be able to get out on Route 66 and fly for several hours through the nondescript desert at 160mph while chatting with my child in the back seat. something that will run past 150,000 miles and not even start to feel aged.

I want a car with so much blue blood in it, that every time I drive it, I burst into tears of enjoyment.

I have the same plaque in my garage.

While it is signed as 'Author Unknown', I believe it was written by Heinrich many years ago.

My story is weird,

I was so content and very into air cooled 911s.
After 13 years of the Carrera, never considering or even getting in a 928
I started searching for a good one that was affordable (to try it)
Now I'm not all that interested in air cooled 911s

As far as PORSCHE cars go for me, the 928 did replace the 911.

When I was 15 I seen Weird Science and said to myself....I will have one of those cars one day (Black 84 -928 S)......well....in 2003...I bought one!!! It was an 86 model (still have it today and being restored). I actually owned a Black 84 model for a couple of years....but there is nothing like the 32V cars.

Like many of the others have said, back when this car was first introduced in the late 70's, and I laid my eyes on it, I was hooked. I vowed that I would own one in the future at some time. The curves and the lines on the car are so unique along with the round headlights, there is nothing like it. I don't have one anymore but I waited 20 years to take the plunge and I would do it again if I could.
It may not be the best performing car, but it's still better looking than most cars made today and hardly anyone has one...you get stares all the time if you like that stuff.

I like my 91 944S2 cab., it's fast and it looks good, but my first shark was a 86 928S, the sound of the 32v V8 engine is hard to beat, with a RBM system, sold the 86 shark and pickup a 87 928S4, and sold it, 5 years later bought my first shark back, love the 928's !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because by every measure they are true supercars. My window stckicker from 1979 was 39k! In today's dollars they were exceptionally expensive and built as such. Where else can you buy a rare and Aluminum bodied supercar for so little money? Just because the market doesn't see the dollar value like say a Miura, Gullwing, GTO, Etc, doesn't mean it's not fully as awesome to drive and own as any hyper priced classic. The fact that it's so cheap is gravy for the goose IMHO. I've owned and driven many more expensive high end cars and yet I've kept coming back to 928's over the years. My 79 is my fifth 928 - and the oldest by far. It's original design, color, and simplicity appeal to me now more so than I appreciated 20 years ago when I owned a few S4's.

The 928 left an indelible imprint on me when I was a kid. In the late 70s I was riding in the back of a VW bug in Alexandria headed toward DC when a 928 came up from behind and then passed us. I instantly fixated on it and strained to watch it until I couldn't see it anymore. The rear end of it was unforgettable and the images stayed with me. Eventually over the years I figured out what car it was that I saw. I added it to my list of potential cars.
Later in 93 I finally bought one. Like a previous poster said, life is too short to waste time driving a mundane car. The 928 is both elegance and character blended into a potent potion.

I drove a lot of cars in the 80's, nothing was like the 928, but I soured a bit when Porsche made it impossible to get one without a sunroof that ruined the headroom, so I switched to a 944T, still never really lost the want for a 928. If I could have wangled an 86 Euro with no sunroof, might never have let it go.

Thirty years later the old 928 was still a very competitive option verses current cars, so I made a cold decision to start looking for one, and a hot decision to buy once I found my US 83 no sunroof 5 spd.

The original question is easy to answer as it is subjective. I like the styling, I appreciate the community support and the folks that lend assistance, and that I can sometimes assist, and the slightly instigational niche the 928 filled with the V-8, water cooling, turtle-car-coup appeals to me.

The 'better car for the money' discussion is tough, the rationalizations are flying but once you get away from personal preference, there isn't much there, there.

First- the baseline is tough to nail down as "what you get for the money" is largely contingent on where on the shark food chain one is feeding and what the benchmark is for "the money".

It was expensive in its day, but that is not an important factor in my appreciation of the are. I don't agree that fit/finish on early cars....particularly early cars that are found now...was high-caliber...unless they've been gone over by one of the all-stars here. It isn't fast even in optimal stock form, by today's standards. When well maintained the ride/handling hold up well and are a great experience. But you have to cling pretty desparately to the 'once a supercar always a supercar' mantra to view it as such today. http://www.koenigsegg.com/models/agera-r/
The changing times were brought into sharp resolution when I watched one of the old add campaigns feature 928s, the narrator assuring that the fine hand crafted Porsche product line would never be produced in high numbers through increased automation and assembly line practices....

I simply have yet to find another car at any price or year I like better in totality. Believe me, I've tried!
