How much abuse would this approach to my sunroof get me?

you better take another look at the 928 roof as its really quite small and thus isnt going to give you much more roof area to insert a sliding roof.
I would n ot do this modification better to buy a nice set of Bilstiens

How about modify the 928 roof to be like the 968? The 968 has a sunroof that doesn't slide, it only raises in the rear and can be removed in ~30 seconds. The fact it doesn't slide means it can be much larger.

I would love to have a sunroof like in that 968. I have looked into all kinds of options. Universal lexan sunroofs are not the right dimensions at all and I don't know if one can be custom made. That'd be the easiest option. It's true that the factory sunroof limits headroom. I'm only 5'10" and have a set of manual seats (mounted to rear set of holes) and I feel crowded by the roof even with the headliner removed. The frame of the car would allow a pretty large hole that would be double the size of the sunroof (obviously). I read all the threads on getting a lexan panel to put in there. No one locally is willing to form it in Tampa. Just thinking about it. I actually saw a converted 928 at a dealer in Tampa and it was just so sad. I would never cut the roof off the car. I love the shape of the car. Just would like an open air feel. Just thinking out loud.

I do miss the sunroof in my 944T, tip it up in the back, take it off, plenty of headroom, but I had it for 5 years while new and under warranty, so no issues.
