How much abuse would this approach to my sunroof get me?
I gave up motorcycles and my primary requirement for my toy cars is that they are convertible. But the 928 gets a pass because it's so damn cool and unique and wasn't available as a convertible. Anyway...I have read all the threads I can find on the topic of sunroofs. Heavy. Broken. Replace roof sheet metal panel. Replace slider with lexan (somehow). Then I stumbled across this historically european (and German) approach and I am considering it to open the roof. They make custom sizes and I could open the whole roof in a way that weighs very little. My car's a rough example and I will never try to get back to stock. Go ahead. Set me straight.

I personally think if you could actually pull this off on a 928 and not have it look like a hack job, it would be pretty bad ***! Now you'll probably get bashed on here by the purist, but as you stated yours will never be put back to stock anyway. I say go for it! Looks like a pricy endeavor.
If you do end up doing it, you MUST post pics of the entire process.

It is your car. You only have to make yourself happy. I would be wary of taking off too much roof without compromising the stiffness, or lack thereof, of the body.

I think the different model you show works pretty well for that style of folding sunroof; it is squarish and a true 4-seater. I do not care for the look personally. On the 928 the roof is much shorter and I know you will double the standard roof opening, but it will still be pretty small. It will also destroy the aerodynamic line of the car. I think that this is one of those ideas you might come up with to solve the open air problem, but will ultimately reject for aesthetics. That is just my opinion.
Good luck,

Neat idea, but it's going to leak. Even OEM installed roofs like that have a huge leak rate. A custom install is going to leak water and air badly. That said, it's your car...cut away!

Wasnt someone thinking of selling their black convertible 928 a month ago? (it was purchased as a fix her up, until the wify got a Cayman)

That white 928 with chopped top looks disturbingly like a Miata. Whatever you do avoid this.

This was the vehicle I was referring to when I said OEM applications have problems with leaks. I worked with the engineer who tested this roof on the Jeep and he said it was a nightmare to reliably keep the water/wind out.
