Do you have a route in mind yet for a ride on Saturday/Sunday of the convention?
We are planning on a longer mountain route on Sat followed by a shorter trip to the lunch location on Sunday for those who would like to participate after a long trip getting here

Alternately for folks who would like a more leisurely day the hotel has a mini bus to take folks around then to town for lunch and some shopping.

Full details and sign up to follow very soon in the registration web site

Dads928,

What is the law regarding bringing a child/minor into Canada? I will have my son (who is 13) with me most likely and he has his own passport. We will not be traveling with his mother. Do I have to have a letter from her to OK him leaving the country without her?

Thanks!

I would check with the US border patrol, this is generally more of an issue when traveling internationally. I travel across the US/Canada border all the time and have never been asked for a letter going either way. Even when my wife travels to south America with the kids they almost never ask for it.

But It could give you piece of mind, just draft up a letter and have it notarized and keep it in your back pocket.

I have travelled internationally with my son without his mother, he has his own passport with no issues in the visiting country or returning to Canada but he is older (17)....there could be an age restriction but unsure of US law.

I was considering taking my plane but the $1600 in fuel kind of shot that down. Heck it will be almost $700 in fuel in the shark. Gonna have to bow out of this one, 1300 miles each way is a bit far.

FYI, for those that are traveling with your kids (15 yrs old or younger) and not with your spouse.

From the Trip Advisor website:

Travelling with Children
If a child is traveling with one parent, the (Canadian) border services official may require a letter of permission from the other parent or documentation that demonstrates that the lone parent is the child's sole guardian. If a child is traveling with someone other than his or her guardian, border authorities will want to see a letter of permission from both of the child's parents / guardians. Ideally, the letter should be notarized.

sorry I didn't get back to you earlier but I don't check the site as often as i would like, just no time...

Trip advisor is accurate. It has nothing to do with the country you are leaving, only the one you are entering. In Canada, as in most states, the definition of Child is 'under 16'. Notwithstanding age of majority, voting, drinking and licensing stuff, the child definition is all that is relevant.

Travelling with a parent is easy and seldom requires any extra paperwork beyond a passport. Don't even try it without a passport unless they are infants. Travelling as a child without a parent will flag that entry for extra scrutiny to ensure the child is not travelling against their will or that of the parent(s). Thats when extra documents are usually required.

If you have been the subject of a divorce or separation , then this is a good example of when permission documents would possibly save some grief at any border crossing. All a pissed off spouse has to do is report to their local police or local children's aid society, that they are concerned you might leave the country and any country's border will detain you......seen it, been there, dealt with this stuff for years.

Surprisingly they sometimes do it just to **** you off...There is seldom a consequence for them either because the courts don't hold them accountable. I have dealt with this on both sides of the border.

Men as well as women have been know to engage in this conduct so its not gender specific.

Having said all of that, they will ask a young person questions at the border as they do you but as long as they are with a parent, have their documents and there are no flags on the computer, the crossing will be as simple as if you were on your own.

Hope that helps...

Ian

is there a registration page yet? is there a room rate discount for the group? the prices online are over $200 a night. considering the cost of the mutli-day trip to get there this may be out of the question expenses wise....

^^^ the registration site will be available very shortly with all details of the event. Prior to that folks have been contacting the hotel to book their rooms asking for the Sharks On Ice event rate which is discounted from the regular prime season rate.

I believe a few from NorCal are entertaining a caravan that could save costs with shared drives/rooms etc.

We are in CA early June so may see you there before the event

Is there anyone one travelling to this event from the southeast? I'm in Atlanta and pondering the 2450 mile (each way) trip.

Ok..who wants to fly there?

It's about $800R/T for a total of three people to go plus bags from San Francisco area.

Each way will be two 3.5hr legs, with gas and nature call stop in the middle. I will not have a 928 to drive at that time, perhaps others will be in the same boat.

Your ride will be a Bonanza P35, N9777Y, and I have about 200hrs in that specific plane as of today, and do about 2/week in it. New engine, leather, and at 11,500', air conditioned on a hot summer day.

It -is- faster than a 928, and the in-flight service is top notch...you bring your own.

You would want to fly in to the Springbank Airport which is very close to Kananaskis. Probably about 30 minutes to the hotel.
