Default Aftermarket Motor mount durability

Three years ago I changed out the original motor mounts on my '85 with aftermarket mounts sourced through one of the big three suppliers (not Fleabay specials). I am currently replacing those mounts with new Volvo mounts from 928'sRUS. You can see how badly collapsed the aftermarket mounts are after only three years and less than 20K miles. Did I get some from a bad batch? What has been your experience with aftermarket motor mounts?

I have the volvo mounts for about 5 years now. Still holding up like day one. I pulled out the Ford ones after less than half a year.

Replacing my OE motor mounts is on my list. Curious, has anyone tried solid aluminum alloy motor mounts? I'd be interested in hearing a comparison/review based on road experience.

There is a whole discussion about them on here somewhere. Search is your friend.

The very reason we stopped selling the so called solid mounts (Ford) was because the manufacturing source changed. The solid mounts started to be made with hollow centers but not filled with water - as per hydraulic mounts - the result was collapsed mounts exactly as your picture depicts. If they were truly solid rubber mounts they would not collapse in this way.
Can you cut one in half?

Roger, The mount is partially hollow, with no fluid. The bottom of the mount--the part that bolts to the crossmember--has about an inch of solid rubber, then after that it is hollow.

The motor mounts take 10+ hours to replace and the OE mounts are known to last. Personally, I'd pay the extra to *know* that they won't need replacing for 15-20 years. That's also the advice that Greg gave me.

I bought a track car last year that had these mounts from 928Motorsports installed. I don't think anyone would want them on a street car. Lots of vibration and makes the car very unpleasant to drive overall. Maybe some benefit for the track, but I wasn't impressed.

You could try polyurethane filling the mounts. Best compromise between standard rubber and solid ones, they sell polyurethane kits at McMaster in 60, 80 and 94 durometer. 60's range is right around stock rubber, and 94 is almost completely hard with no give, i go with 80. Have done many mounts for other people.

I have had the 928sRus Volvo mounts for almost three years now. Still holding their original height and dampens the engine vibration nicely.

Just installed my Volvo mounts, so far so good. FYI only torque the bolts to 30lbs and use Merlin's trick to bend the hooks.

My experience is different. I've replaced two sets of Porsche mounts now that were less than 3 years old. I'd rather toss the extra $400.00 in to the gas tank.

Out of interest, did they have the S4 belly pan installed with the MM-cooling vents on?

Just wondering if running with no pan, or just an aluminum ones without vents, reduces MM life.

I have also had poor life out of Porsche mounts - will never use them again.

If I pay a large premium I certainly expect to get premium performance - I didn't.

The original mounts died after about 8 years on the car - the first 6 years on the east coast ~Boston area, the last 2 years in Phoenix. The next ones lasted about 4 years in Phoenix. To me that isn't even close to long enough....
