That point varies widely. To some people a 928 with a blown big block and a power glide transmission is still a 928. Yet to others, put volvo motor mounts or a porkensioner in your car and it's a bastard.

What is special about a 1982 928. So I might as well have fun. My wifes bone stock 1986.5 928s with 45k is a different story.

What's there to not like? It's a V12! With Toyota reliability in a compact package with the oil sump in the right spot. My only suggestion would be power adders. I'd like to see at least three.

Couple turbos and a twin screw would be nice up front. But people keep telling me it's not all about power for some reason. Gotta think about weight distribution and balance and all that, after all it's a Porsche. Three 20 lb nitrous bottles in the back would even things out.

McLaren, Lola, Lotus (just to name a few) have carried many different engines over the years.
That doesn't change what they are.

One of the best modern day sports cars, the Lotus Elise, has an engine from a Toyota Corolla.

OK got it so a 928 with a 1600 cc Toyota and a two speed powerglide is still a Porsche...OK

If you want something slower than a US 16V automatic, that sounds like a good formula.

Apparently it's still a Porsche with a Corvette transaxle (which I have no problem with), so why not swap motors? My next 928 will have a boosted vh45 or if I go easy a boosted 5.3 or 6.0 Chevy. What makes a 928 special is the chassis and suspension...in other words how it feels and handles. That motor can't be that heavy so it should be awesome. BTW those motors scatter connecting rods if you boost them too hard be careful! I'm assuming you guys have seen Smokey Nagata's Top Secret twin turbo v12 supra right? Might get some ideas for plumbing. Also, I hate to bear bad news but they don't make that much low end torque or horsepower, but it will be incredibly good with some tuning and horsepressure. Awesome project!

The narrow v-angle should be good for leaving room for turbos, although there are other placements... I don't know if there's an economical dry sump kit for that engine, which would help with center of gravity and hood clearance.
