Default 928 Tire Recommendations

I am looking for a new set of tires for my '85 928 Euro. This is my weekend toy, not my daily driver. I rarely take it out in the rain, I'm looking for great grip and nice comfort as a bonus, but will sacrifice the former for the latter. I may consider spending an arm or a leg, but not both.

What does the forum have on their cars, and recommend?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Michelin Super Sports. What wheels/sizes are you currently running. Continental Extreme DW have been great for me.

Frankly for street tire and street use it makes little difference. You can not drive anywhere near 9/10 on the street for long without going to jail or being dead........ like most things automotive, tires are a compromise but any modern tire is much better than what was original equipment when the 928 was new.... The big known premium tires charge accordingly but only because of the PERCEPTION that they are better ! Buy the cheap tires and just run it. If you decide to track it buy another set of Victor racers or the like and mount to another set of wheels..... Having street tire's which stick 5%10% better really is a moot point if you never actually drive at over 75%.

I use Hankook Ventus V12 for my summer tires (235/35-19 F and 285/30 -19 rear). I use Kumho cheapo all seasons in stock size (nearly cause they are 50 series in back) for everything other than summer.

What James said is right. The only caveat is don't, DON'T, DO NOT use summer tires in the cold / snow / ice. You will be in the ditch. They get hard and have no grip.

I run my baby hard and long. I used the Nexus 3000 until the stopped making them and now I am running nexus 5000s. I really liked the 3000s. I put at least 50,000 miles on a few sets (I run the he'll out of my avitar)... the 5000s are good so far. I have about 5K on them so far...

I live in AZ. I drive a lot of long hard miles at high speeds... the Mtn driving I have done the 3000s did very nice. good performance. I need more time on the 5000s, but for $650 a set of four (2x235 & 2x285)s, I am very happy and about to purchase another set for the 5-speed I just got.

I recommend you got to www.tirerack.com and search through the tires that fit your wheels. I'm afraid your next question may be that there aren't good choices for stock wheels. That's a problem for the 16" by 7"/8" wheels.

Keep in mind your driving style, goals and environment. For example, those "uber max summer mega performance" tires will be slippery when driven in cooler temps after a light rain.

Good points by Jim about "street" tires..... On my old M3 it came with Michelin PS2's...great tires and lasted only 22k.....I put a set of Continental DWS extreme contacts on because they were much cheaper and had a 50k warranty....I was very impressed with their ride comfort and reduced noise and superior grip in poor weather, sure they didn't have the peak grip in the dry, but it was very controllable when sliding....can't ask for much more than that!!!

I won't buy anything but Michelins for my daily drivers, I'm well past 90,000 miles on one set and their not done yet. But I wasn't sure how they did for performance tires. Hopefully I don't ever put 90,000 on my 928.

Micheline makes great tires. If you don't want to spring for those I would recommend the Sumitomo HTR ZIII. The Tire Rack sponsor on this board said it's their most popular 911 tire if that tells you anything. They are summer only though.

Although my experience was on my 944/968 conversion and not a shark. I love the Hankook Ventus V12's . I got these looking for excellentnt dry summer traction but required a quieter smoother ride than the previous Michelins. I was very please with there smooth quiet ride and predictable grip

I sell Cooper RS3 tires and they seem to do very well. Great value for what they are. Really sticky and they claim to be worth a quarter second in the quarter mile.
