Default Porsche 928 vs. BMW 635csi (E24)

I did a search on this board and was surprised to find out nobody posted in regards to this topic. I know I know, the Porsche is better for reasons X, Y, and Z. Bare with me here. I love BMW’s (well everything before the new designs), and the 6 series is no exception. Your thoughts please on this vehicle compared to the 86 and previous 928’s. I know many will say it’s like comparing apples to oranges, but I do think it’s worth a visit.

The following article isn’t pertaining to your run of the mill 635csi, but a great read nonetheless:

If you put them next to each other, the BMTroubleYou looks like stone age meets the future. For years, BMW has tried to stop the clock, but with the 928, Porsche advanced it. That's why it sill looks new, more than 25 years after it was introduced.

I love the 635 csi - my ex's dad had a minter sat in the garage, he was too skint to run it. Looks really cool, imo, and drives like a large, long, heavy thing, with a decent lump. As Frau Nicole says, it's a different 'generation' to the 928, but only coz the 928 moved the game on at that time. I want one in my FantasyGarage.

Hi

since I own both cars I should probably post to this thread.
First I don't agree that the 635 looks like stone age compared to the 928 nor does it look over 20 years old (probably depends a lot on the colour), but of course neither does the 928 which is sort of more timeless, but since it has not even an indirect successor that is quite easy (should they ever build a 'new' 928 things could be different.

Pros 635:
- one of the best engines ever, the famous M30 (it has 3450 cc, but behaves like it has only 1500 cc compared to 928 engine)
- Gearbox much more precise and much easier to shift
- large boot
- very economical and easy to work on

Cons 635:
- roadholding (e.g. too much body roll)
- seats
- stiffness of body

Pros 928
- very 'cool' car in every respect (looks, sound, driving position)
- high speed stability and generally excellent suspension and roadholding
- torque and (maximum) power of engine

Cons 928:
- uneconomical (parts, gasoline consumption)

BTW one shouldn't forget that the 928 cost almost twice as much as the 635 ... They are both good cars, but of course the 635 is only high end, whereas the 928 is top end.

Cheers Thomas

Some comparisons here:

http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/reviews.htm

In the article you mentioned the 928S4 beats the M6 in all perfomance categories - acceleration, braking, roadholding, and gas mileage. The M6 is slightly heavier, and has less horsepower and torque. The I6 of the M6 is also has a peakier torque band than the S4's V8. The M6 has an "aging" semi-trailing arm rear suspension, while the S4 has a multi-link rear with toe compensation.

85-86 will have almost as much power as the '87 S4 in the review, and are a little lighter and slightly more "tossable" than the S4. 83-84S loose some more horsepower, and a little less torque.

Not having driven one, and based only on the articles I have seen, the only thing the M6 appears to do better than the 928 is carry 4 people and luggage with more room.

I'm obviously biased, owning an 86 928S myself. But every article I have ever seen comparing a 928 with any same year BMW competition including the M6 and 850i has favored the 928. If you're wondering why we don't talk about the M6 much here, that could be why.

I think that both the 6-series and the 928 are great cars.. I just like the 928 better, more in my taste..

Ok, I'll bit on this one. If I were to compare a 928 with any BMW it would be a later model 8 series

Agreed. And if the 8 series had gotten a nicer rear end, it wouldn't be so bad. But as it is, it's boring, boring, boring...

IMHO, the 850 (or 840 if you prefer, and personally, I do ) is the best looking BMW ever. Performance of the 850 is, however, not very impressive (on paper at least), and I understand maintenance is a nightmare (might be nothing more than a bad reputation, dunno?).

BUT, even if the 928 was not an alternative, I'd probably throw in a little extra and get a similar MY SL500 instead. The 850 just have way too many nice competitors in its class/price-range to ever end up in my garage

I've driven a 850CSi to see if it was interesting when I was looking for a 928.

It sure is a fast car, but it feels big and doesn't wrap around you like pretty much any Porsche do.

To sum it up I'd say that it's beatiful and fast but not as involving as a 928. A 928 delivers a bigger smile when you drive it and is just as comfortable.

Apples and oranges...

The inference that Bimmers are trouble is off the mark, at least regarding the I6 motors. BMW's early 4 and 6 cyl M motors are considered some of the best motors built... Ever. As an example, I logged almost 250,000 miles on an older Euro 323I and only had to do regular maintenance. It's now in the hands of a co-worker and used for auto crossing... Orig. untouched motor and trans...

The 8-series did suffer some QC issues and are considered a maintenance nightmare by most honest owners... Likewise, the new M-series 8 cyl had some issues that (supposedly) have been addressed. Something about tolerances being too tight in the bottom end reducing the amount of oil getting to bearings??? With that said, Bimmers offer great performance and reliability for the money... New and used.

Comparing two autos that when new had such a great price disparity is not fair...

Soon I'll have a Porsche (Apple) and continue to have Bimmers (Oranges) as daily drivers...

I had a 1983 633CSI. Loved the car. Rock solid dependable. I probably wouldn't have sold it if hadn't gotten banged up. I'll eventually get another 6 series I think. One of the best styling designs out there. It was a bit more spacious than my 928s. Cost less to insure. Slower, but it wasn't meant to be a Porsche killer. Given the right 6 series, I'd trade one of my 928 for one today.

"Given the right 6 series, I'd trade one of my 928 for one today." Powerful statement for a man with so many 928's. I too love the design. It has a nostalgic flare about it without being too stuck in the 80's. Some great comments guys. Everything I've read also states that the engine in those cars are rock solid.

This stuff should be moved to O/T

Those of us in Texas watched GW displace "Queen Richards", when she referred to him as the "little shrub", and then he ran the world's seventh largest economy (Texas) for six years far more successfully than many states are being managed these days.

GWC may be great, but GWB is far from a dope. Closer to on topic, having firsthand experience with over a hundred fighter pilot candidates in the largest military flight training system in the U.S, (Corpus Christi/Kingsville, TX.) The military doesn't hand over the keys to jets to just anyone.

Politics should stay O/T. Badmouthing GWB is likely to raise the ire of most Rennlist Texans.

I liked every Bmw I ever met -in Deutchland-.
Not a good comparo candidate for the 928 though.
Jeff,
I agree the prez topic should go elsewhere, but curb the Fox News Poll of
"those of us in Texas". I voted for George and it won't happen again. BTW we are suffering in Texas because his tax cutting last bi-annum.
