Default Arrrgghh...front grill install, what am I missing??

OK, so I have my replacement front grill and grill supports...let's put 'em on (86.5). First off, even before looking at the car, I found some pics on here (Crumpler's when he was repairing some stuff up front) and I don't know how the horizontal pieces stay attached. They appear to fit into holes along the bottom of the vertical support pieces, but what holds them in there?

More importantly...see photo below. I can see where the old vertical pieces were attached, pieces were still bolted to the car (removed in the pic). I've put the new one in, and I just don't see how it can possibly fit. I would have to seriously bend it to the point where the piece that attaches at the top won't be flush with the panel. And, this is definitely NOT the longer center piece...this is one of the two shorter ones. The longer piece has the same problem when test fit into it's proper location.

Hey Buddy,
There's a chance I got you into this mess so I should help. LOL.

I think it got back to stock conformation -- but honestly mine was so jacked up by PO, there's still a chance I improvised.
Maybe a grey beard can confirm, but I found more pics.
Hope they help.
The holes you see in the second pic are where the hex head bolts go in with threads facing into engine side.

Right, I could see where the old broken pieces were still attached on my car. But as you can see from my picture, the new piece just doesn't seem to fit there, unless I'm missing something obvious.

Hmmmm.

I see what you see.

I don't think the supports ever changed size as the car changed from OB to S3 to later years. So the likelihood of you being sent wrong size part is low.
I reused my shorter supports and ordered a remanufactured longer one from Roger for the middle.

The advantage of being a crumpler is you can bend stuff and make it fit. You can see the angle of my support elbow is almost 90 degrees as it hits the bumper.

Can you feel any give in which to bend it?

There is definitely some give, but it's already got more of a bend on that part of the support than the lower sections. It seemed like it would break or be too deformed to fit if I tried to move it in that far, but maybe that's what has to happen. I'll play with it some more, maybe I'm being too gentle.

I was thinking, maybe try to assemble horizontals first to the verticals, that may change some of the overall shape.

I had it put together, then pushed in bottom, then fastened arms to bumper, then spoiler. I believe that was the order I went in.

Parts are all the same 77 to 86 so chances of something going on with the parts is slim.
I know you have sorted the two end stays from the center.
What about the position of the spoiler to the lower body? If the spoiler sits too high it would result in what you are seeing.

Hmm...it SEEMS right...although it's obviously been rigged to stay on tight...the middle is zip-tied to that mysterious do-nothing bracket below the condenser fan. I'm not sure how it could really move much though, but I'll look at that as well.

NOTE if your bumper has been pushed in then the grill stands will not fit as they should,
so a shock inspection should be performed

This is what I was going to suggest. US 928 bumper shocks do not rebound once pushed in. (RoW cars have solid mounts)

US bumper shocks are one time use.
Though some have pulled them back to original position the impact absorption feature is lost

the Euro counterparts are deformable cans that are also one time use

I'm confused by this. Wouldn't the front nose be visually messed up if this were the case? The vertical support mounting points are all on the nose..the underside of the top part and the top of the bottom, if that makes any sense. I don't see how the nose could have been hit, compressing the bumper shocks, without obviously deforming the nose.

That being said, how would I check the bumper shock for this problem?

A little OT here, but Dave I noticed in your pics that the "C-clip" for the headlight linkage is MIA. The arm has been known to come off and poke a real nice hole in your radiator. Might want to replace the c-clip or use aircraft safety wire to save your radiator.
