Dammit! Car died :(
I was just driving along... Suddenly it slowed down, tach dropped to 0 and all the lights came on. I coasted it into a parking lot. It cranks fine, and after doing a bit of that I smell gas, I'm guessing there's no spark. There is still visible timing belt when I peer through the can cover vents BTW.
Any thoughts? I guess I'll have it towed home and deal with it this weekend.

Btw I saw the thread where someone else with a '86.5 had what seemed like identical symptoms (so far...I don't know that mine will magically start at some future time) and it turned out to be an injector connector shorting out. I'm guessing it could also be a computer problem of some sort.

...and if that doesn't work, check another relay.

New-to-you car, if you haven't already...: replace the fuel pump relay at XX, the ignition relay (EZF) in position XVI, Starter relay at XIV, injection control relay at XXV. All 53B type. Use Good Relays. Carefully clean the positive battery terminals where all those smaller wires connect.

I'm getting the feeling that you guys think I should check some relays :-) Thanks for the input...I will definitely do that! That would certainly be a nice easy fix...

Dumb question here: Are these relays something that a local auto parts store would have (seems unlikely), or do I need to buy them from Roger? I'll cheerfully do that of course, but I'd rather in this case get them ASAP, of course.

(*sigh*) No, the horn doesn't work. The AC condenser fan doesn't work either. I hadn't prioritized looking into why they don't work yet, but it kinda makes the relay questionable. In fact, there is a relay sitting on the passenger side parcel shelf from the PO, I can't recall if it is a 53 but again...I have no clue if it's any good.

Not sure where in South Florida you are, but I will be in Miami (Doral area) on Sunday for about 10 days and have some good 53 relays that I can bring if you need to do some trouble shooting. In fact I have a nearly new CEB for an 86.5 sitting on the shelf with most of the relays still in it that I can bring with me.
Cheers!

If all that stuff is dufo at the same time, buy a case of relays and a few cans of Deoxit spray, and plan on doing the whole CE refresh in one shot. Clean the grounds right above the CE panel WYAIT. In your climate, there are bound to be a few hidden issues waiting to bite you anyway. Do it once, do it right, do it like you mean it, never look back and worry.

I actually work in Doral, but live in Sunrise...it's about 30-45 minutes north, right off I-75. I'll PM you my number.
I did go over to the car this evening and try a couple things. I know the HVAC blower works...sort of...it sometimes acts like the switch is a bit dodgy, so I don't know HOW good the relay is, but it works sometimes. I put that in the Fuel pump, EZH and LH locations, one at a time, and it didn't help. I also checked the fuel pump fuse, it was fine. I noticed a couple other odd things while there. For starters, it's pretty clear why my condenser fan and fog lights don't work: No relays. And my reverse light relay is just a jumper. Anyway, I guess I didn't really rule out anything, just took a leap at getting lucky and it didn't pan out.
Probably not related, but what are the symptoms of a disconnected driver's side coil ground. Mine is just hanging there, and in fact has been since I got the car. I couldn't find an obvious attach point, but since everything seemed to run fine without it, I forgot about it.

Dr. Bob, I hear ya. I'm definitely putting that on the high priority list, although hopefully I can find a single specific reason for current failure first.
