1986 fuel rail bend - problem?
Hi all,
Thought i'd introduce myself.
I bought a 1986 928 a couple of months or so ago and am loving this car.
After driving it a while, the paint peeling off the intake started to annoy me so i decided to take it out and repaint it.
That little decision has led me to the last few weekends of removing and cleaning filthy injectors, taking out the throttle and cleaning the cm thick schmutz off it, snapping a fair few fossilised breather and vacuum hoses along the way, as well as finding a lot of disconnected stuff in the engine bay (breather and vacuum again). Deep joy. It actually ran ok, albeit a bit powerless.
I was cleaning the fuel rail tonight and thought i'd post a quick question. I haven't done much automotive work before and have a lot of enthusiasm but not much knowledge. The connector to the fuel lines has a dogleg in it and its pinched pretty tight and i'm not sure if it comes out the factory like that or someone has done something stupid to it? Here's a photo.
Being a pressure system, i'd guess this doesn't affect the fuel delivery unless maybe you've got the throttle wide open and the flow needs to be pretty fast.
Can anyone chime in and let me know if you think this might affect performance and/or is something you think i should fix?
Would appreciate any input.

that is factory. I would not try to unbend it, as it will crack the metal.

Won't be a problem Dan, that kink is at the end of the rail just before the driver-side damper, all the injectors on that rail have already been fed by then. Normally you won't run into any fueling problems with the stock equipment, add some boost however and you would want to perhaps update the fueling.

While you have everything apart, plan on replacing all the rubber fuel hoses.

It's hard as a rock......All the others look ok and have some flex.

BTW, referring to my photo above, can anyone tell me if i need that fuel line as a pre-bent piece or will normal fuel line bend that much without kinking?
Going to try and pick some up today. Doubt i'll be able to find a pre-bent piece easily.

A braided stainless steel line will work well without kinking. Add an inch to the length of the new line to reduce the U in the line. When you pull the old line apart to get the metal ends. look for sharp barbs and sand them (take any sharpness away) and then use new hose clamps.

Intake throttle body mount - rubber boots
Thanks for the info so far guys, as recommended I've decided i'll leave the fuel rail bend as is, and i took the rubber u-shape fuel line off and it's actually in pretty good shape .....seems the last mechanic did actually replace them all. The tight bend made it feel harder than it was. I'll replace them all again at some stage down the track, but i'll try to limit my scope for the job at hand.
A quick update if anyone is interested.
Yesterday i was going to put the air intake base ( below the MAF - not sure if there's a better name) back in with the new o-rings etc in place, but realised that the old rubber boots that bolt in onto the block (single peice, threaded each end) have disintegrated so much that two of them are now just thin flat metal discs screwed into the engine. Can't figure out a way to remove them....going to try to drill them out, but has anyone run across this problem before and have words of wisdom?
Added to that, the new rubber mounts i got (part 999.703.265.00) seem about 5mm shorter in thread length than the original and are hexagonal not circular.
That was the part that 928GT.com was listing in their intake refresh for an 86 928 (Jan build)....i managed to find some locally.
They apparently superceded the old circular version with a hexagaonal design ??? (great, may now be able to get them back out when the rubber rots again) but with the shorter length i now can't get the nut to bite for more than a turn when attaching to the air guide base. OMFG. My first instinct is to counterbore the base so i make a little socket for the nut and washer to sit in, but that's not going to work for the rear of the three which is hidden under the body. can't get at it. Have i got the right part, anyone know?
Turning into a bit of a nightmare....and here i was thinking this would be a weekend or two.

The standoffs - rubber biscuits- are different sizes between the sides and the one in the valley IIRC. So maybe there is a part number discrepancy there. They are frequently found in the condition you found them in, with only the bottom half still there. Some folks have been able to coerce them into unthreading by notching or using a chisel and tapping counter clockwise. Probably soak them in favorite penetrant for a while, first.
Make sure you are comfortable with the U hose- it is NLA no longer available. The fuel lines sometimes fail first in the inner liner. A crafty aftermarket version is available from the vendors, as is a kit to replace the oem lines the with rubber/clamps.

Thanks SMT, i'll try those techniques out before drilling! Gotta be easier and a lot less risky if they work.
Managed to find a diagram of the parts that someone posted in another thread, but still don't know the parts number...
Haven't gotten around to getting a PET that everyone mentions.... if anyone could look these up (No's 23 & 27) i would be eternally grateful.

You can get the standoffs from Roger at 928Srus. They aren't expensive. It looks like you still have the bottom flat plate left on the right and left sides. You can get a hold of that with a pair of pliers and unscrew them. Be careful though. One of mine broke and had to be drilled out on my 86. I can't tell about the back mount. It's difficult to see from your picture.

Thanks for that Bertrand
It 's a bit confusing but i think that they have superceded a couple of those standoffs:
(23)
928 110 191 00 - still being manufactured, found a couple locally
928 110 191 03 - guessing is superceded by the number above. Can't find thee stocked by anyone.
(27)
999.703.265.00 - still being manufactured, found a couple locally
930.110.579.01 - think is superceded by the pieces i bought originally (.265 as above).... seems to be shown on this site (you can do a text search for the number) http://www.einmaligparts.com/Supersessions_c_7427.html
I haven't picked up the (23) 920.110.191.00 yet, but i've got my fingers crossed they fit the side mounts with enough thread.
The problem i'm finding is that the (27) 999.703.265.00 just doesn't fit on these air guides, in either rear or side position. The threads are too short to be able to get any good purchase on with the nut from the other side, even with a paper thin washer. They are also too big to fit in the socket at the rear position (where they seem to belong if i'm reading that parts diagram right). The big size issue you can fit with a dremel, but the thread length is a killer.
I'll keep looking for a 930.110.579.01 for the rear (27), maybe someone still has one.....
