Default What brand and weight oil do you use?

Since we are expected to get up to 6" of snow tonight I figered packing her up for the winter even though it came a couple months late. I thought tomorrow I could change the engine oil and filter. What is everyone's preference?

Also is changing the tranny fluid a newbies task or should this be left to the pros?

Politics & religion are less controversial. Rotella T here, because my others use it so I have it on hand.

I use Mobil 1 20-50. As stated above, oil is a very controversial topic in this forum.

Oh my. This should be good.

Weight is as recommended by Porsche. 20w50 unless you plan on running it in the cold temps.
High levels of zinc & phosphorus (ZDDP) is a good idea too. Some use an additive, some use "specialty" oil for older cars that need it.

Brand gets a little...

Contentious.

Changing the trans fluid isn't that big of a deal. But it's a bit finicky. Don't overtighten the bolts, which take very little torque.
Filling it is challenging. Proper level is critical. Getting it there can be interesting.
There are a few threads on it, here is one:

I guess that defines what you consider cold. Our cold is...... Well cold. I don't plan on running it out on the road until probably late March or April. So probably above freezing. Not my daily driver. However I may start it up from time to time while I'm doing other things.

Thanks for the tranny info. I will need to pick up a torque wrench.

I'm between Green Bay and Appleton. I know what cold is.

I'd stick with the 20w50 anyway. You won't be driving it, or pushing it hard.
And starting it periodically during the winter isn't the best practice. Unless you get it up to full temp, you will be collecting condensation inside the engine.

I know there are times it's necessary, but I avoid it as much as possible.

(a) Move to South Florida
(b) 20w50. It has Castrol in it now, but I'll most likely go with Amsoil Z-Rod or the Brad Penn stuff, based on what I've read....although I honestly believe if you use the proper weight and make sure it has sufficient zinc it doesn't make much difference what brand you pick.

Having been born in NY but raised on Hilton Head Island SC with a 7 year stint in AZ and a couple months in Jacksonville I can say I probably have the same amount of interest in moving to south Florida as you do in moving to Wisconsin. Nothing against the state but of all the places I have lived or spent time in that would not be a top choice. I did enjoy Boca a couple times when I was younger.

Lol I get what you're saying, but it definitely makes that "Will I drive it in cold weather?" question moot!

That's true but then I would have to get the AC fixed
