That's the production number for the car, which is the identifier for the build sheet that listed all the options and interior/exterior color codes. If you look in the 1981 928 Brochure, there's a pic of an '80 with the production number on the windshield:

Thanks, Rob - that's a cool photo. Finding that number is like an easter egg hunt. I've also found it written in white paint marker on the door shells too; above where the window guts access opening is. I need to replace the vapor barriers, but I’ve left them in place due to the writing. I’ve never removed my rear quarters, but I’d bet good money it’s written there too.

What I sometimes wonder is whether the build sheet was created based on a customer’s request or if was the supply guy saying “get rid of these spares.” E.g., I find it hard to believe someone ordered my car and was like “oh yeah, I can’t wait ‘til I sit my butt in that sweet cobalt blue with raspberry leather seats.” Instead, I think the conversation on the assembly line was more like “Are you sure you want me to put these seats in this car?” But, it was the 90’s I guess and coke was prevalent <lol>

There have been some rather baffling originally optioned combos.

Trying to get the correct identification for my 86 interior. Looks like champagne but varies a bit. Code on sticker is 98. Code on seat sticker is Z40. Any ideas? Rob?😀

If you look in the STZ section of PET 7.1 or higher, on sheet 808-00 they list all the possible codes for standard seating materials. Z40 is not a standard seat materials code for any regular leather/vinyl/velour/script option for '86. And 98 is usually a special order color combo that used some Porsche color combo that wasn't normally offered in 928s, perhaps something from a 911 or 944. What's the last 6 of your '86's VIN? I'll see if I can find anything else out.

Thanks, Rob! That’s what I was thinking but wasn’t able to find anything?

That VIN has three Z options:

00311 - Champagner - This is the seat color option - the seat code listed is WWW, which is usually for custom seat material, so maybe it's a custom champagne color?
00321- Champagner- This will be for the champagne carpet, though the carpet code listed is 999, so perhaps it too is a 'custom' champagne color? (If it were just standard champagne, I would think they would have used code 1VD for the carpet, but they didn't)
02101- I don't know what this refers to.

For what it's worth, there's another '86 Euro S with the same three Z-options, and with the same interior code 98, carpet 999 and seat WWW codes, discussed here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...l#post18915856 But its seats and carpet were listed as Gray Beige, which was a standard color available in 1986.

I don't know how helpful this is but there were three very similar leather colours available which for all intents and purposes were minor variations of the same general colour; cashmere beige (more drab), champagne (more vibrant) and a champagne revision (lighter tan, less orange I think?). I believe you might have the champagne revision over champagne carpet. It then gets confusing when grey beige looks a bit like cashmere beige as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche switched the names around in certain model years, just to annoy us.

Here's a 1981 911SC with champagne over tan carpet with brown accents. The same as in my 1981 928S.

Thanks, Rob! As usual, a big help! It is real close to Champagne but just a bit of a variant that makes it tough to match. I ran into the same thing with my GT that I just let go. The car is a full leather with no vinyl to be seen. I find it interesting that Porsche would offer multiple colors with such subtle variants.

Thanks for the input. The biggest challenge I have is matching Linen interiors. That color really seems to vary by model year. One we recently did had Linen on its spec sheet but it wasn’t even close to any of the Porsche correct linen leathers that you can currently get. We finally found a Mercedes leather of the same year range that was a perfect match. I think a number of the manufacturers shared some of the same colors but called them whatever they wanted.

How many hides does it take to do one car? In the years that Porsche was doing lots of partial/full leather cars, if they made 4000-5000 928s and 10,000 911s annually in the mid 80's, and (make up a number) a third had full leather interiors, that's a lot of hides. I wouldn't be surprised if they had multiple suppliers for leather.

To do an entire car you’re looking around 7 hides depending on size and quality.
