Default What's this noise?

1981 928, just changed the TB/wp/cam gears, oil pump refurbished and a tensioner rebuild with new pulleys. On start I had a squeaking/ rasping noise. I took the accessory belts off one at a time to isolate the noise. I got to the last one and the noise is still there! A buddy thinks it could be the main bearings.

Oil pump or water pump noise? Use a long metal rod/screwdriver to your ear or a mechanics stethoscope to check.

put a stethascope on the metal parts of the water pump and it will be clear as day. not main bearings

The noise is not coming from the water pump. The stethoscope confirms it is a happy camper. I'm thinking it could be the concave washer on the back of the timing gear cog at the main shaft. I bent it a bit on removal and may not have got it perfectly returned to shape. Thoughts?

Possible, especially with the back washer. Although tough to make out direction on a recording, based on the intensity and the fact that you were aiming at the crank, I'm concluding that you believe the noise is most intense in the crank area.

If it is the back washer your stethoscope should pick the sound up through the block.

So, I just upgradeable to the porkensioner and the noises are all gone. Even though I had rebuilt the stock tensioner and installed brand new pulleys I found that someone had used a later model tension arm on this car. That seems to have been the root of the noise and the belt riding to far aft on the PS cam gear.

how far over to make noise like that? was it rubbing on the cover? did you change the water pump?

Mark, I replaced the wp and TB, rebuilt the tensioner and replaced the pulleys, replaced all front end seals including oil pump. I also replaced the cam drive pulleys. After the job was done I had that noise and the tb was riding at the very back of the passenger side cam cog. I couldn't live with it so I took it all apart and replaced the stock tensioner with a porkensioner. The tensioner arm was wrong for this year. As near as I can figure it was making the belt shift back and since the force of the belt tension was asymmetric i was getting some squeak out of the tensioner pulleys. After a couple hundred miles I will pull the PS TB cover as are how the belt is tracking.

Can you see what you need to see through the vent on top of the cover, underneath the intake air supply tube?

All you can really tell from that is that the belt is tracking steady, i.e. not moving fore and aft. The cover has to come off to ID where it is riding on the cam cog. This is no big deal, there is only one 10mm bolt holding the cover on and nothing else has to be removed, other than the intake tube.

Thanks Ash, yep I know how to have fun.

Time from bonnet up to bonnet down was 5 minutes. Time from bonnet up to photo was only 2 minutes! It is stupid easy to check this in the 16v. Looks like it's tracking perfect now.
