Automatic shifter handle help!
I have a 1986 Euro. Looking for a factory Automatic shifter handle. Any idea if there are different handles for different model years? I sourced a used handle from a West Coast junk yard but the handle I received doesn't look like my original shifter handle. The dealer quoted me $435.00 for a new shifter handle.

Yes there is different shifter handles.
There's three different part# in PET.
- 78-82: 922 424 170 03
- 83-86: 928 426 077 00
- 87-95: 928 426 075 01
Check with 928Intl for a used one.

re these part numbers the same for a Euro vs US car?
922 424 170 03 was used on the three speed transmission.
To be precise 928 426 077 00 was used from 83 to 84.
928 426 075 01 was used from 85 forward.
There is a suffix after the number to denote the material and color.

It's not the best made. It looks stock. The handle has come loose from the base. The glue isn't that strong that holds it together. There should be a better option out there for a t-handle shifter.

Currently (as of today) Paul Champagne shifter is listed as out-of-stock/coming soon. I have the same problem, so I've emailed Paul to see if they're likely to be re-stocked any time soon.
Also as of this week, Mark has no (black) used shifters in stock -- tried to buy one using the 50% off sale.
The Jaeger T-handle replacement looks promising, but the note above suggesting it is not particularly well built is less than encouraging.

I have used a Momo unit for over 10 years with no problems. Looks good, works well and way better than the stock item IMHO and I thought they were quite reasonably priced when I purchased mine.
Needless to say not a concourse winning item if you are into such [I am not].

So what are the aftermarket options on these? My original failed (as so many seem to) at the base where the fixing screws live. I sourced a replacement, but if there's a good aftermarket piece available I may just squirrel away the replacement for a while and go with a different option for a while.
Trius in Hollywood was working on a replacement a few years ago but I'm way out of touch with him and that group now.

Here's what I've found for replacement options in my search. For now, these are just results of research. Others who have gone down this path will have to comment on quality. Keep in mind this is for my 1988 -- which I'm pretty sure means this research is useful for all auto trans 928's greater than or equal to 1985. Earlier models I know have a different part number (see Roger's excellent post on that), so this research doesn't consider that.
Porsche Original Equipment
Some sites list it as NLA, but Mark still has it listed as a new item on his site, and I think Roger has some too. As do 928 Specialists. Pricey at $400 or more, and just as fragile as the unit it's replacing. But it's the real deal, and that's important to some of us. Nearly impossible to find a good used one (I've asked Mark about three times over the last year with no luck).

I personally like the original look of the Jager T-handle, but based on my readings of the posts here, I expect Paul's single grip to be a much higher quality item.
There are lots of posts here on repairing a broken unit -- and once I have a functioning shifter, I might give that a try for my old one.

Paul Champagne is about to go to market with some really nice single grip shifters — and in a variety of cover options. He sent me a link (and asked me not to post it), but if you email him, I'm sure he will hook you up. I've ordered one and will post my experience. For the single handle model one pushes down on the entire shifter handle to move past the lock-outs, and several RL'ers have commented favorably on that interface approach.

Momo makes several shifters that can be used, and several Rennlister have commented favorably on them. 928 Specialists (and probably other RL vendors) sell a single grip model that seems to be very popular. Link here.

Jager also sells two models. A T-handle replacement and a single grip model. T-handle here. Single grip (he calls it 'GT style') here. I ordered one of the T-handle models from Jager too.
