Road Trip El Paso, Houston, Chicago, Miami, Houston, El Paso.
Hey guys, planning on doing a long road trip in the next few months and was wondering if you guys have any tips of things I can get my car ready for such a distance trip? Set up on suspension or other little tricks that can make it more efficient that anyone might recommend?
I have new tires up front but rear tires need to be replaced.
Thanks

Hi Ricardo

Ok a little 5,000 mi excursion !! Get AAA long distance towing service if you can.... Also recognize that plan B can easily be renting a U-haul truck and trailer out in the middle of Nowhere USA just to bring your 928 home or getting it shipped which can take a week or so to arrainge. There are few good repair shops and the average generalist easily will do more harm than good. Odds are you will not have any problems but be prepared for IF something happens. Which means have $$$$ available

download: www.waze.com onto your phone. I drove from Houston, TX to Jacksonville, Fl last year on Route 10. Cops detected on average every 18 minutes ! Drove from there to CT the following week and very few LEO's. Have a great trip. T

Tires is good, also be sure you are caught up on other maintenance. Check the radiator hoses, replace if there is any uncertainty. I would rather travel with good hoses on the engine instead of spares in the back. And beware of poor-quality hoses, the "URO" brand for example is low-quality Chinese with less than half the reinforcing braid of factory or other aftermarket hoses.
Also check fuel hoses carefully and replace if there is any doubt.
There's a couple of things that can leave you stuck without warning. One is the LH, if it has not been rebuilt then there is a "hybrid" circuit that will die at some point. Louie Ott stocks JDS rebuilds, click here.
The other is the fuel pump, if it is original then I would go ahead and swap that. The fuel pump in our '88 S4 suffered sudden death at around 85K miles, brushes were gone. I think it is the corrosive effects of the current fuel blends.
Have a great trip!

Thank you everyone that put their sense into. I have a GoPro that will be mounted I'm hoping to make a fast motion video out of and post it along with pictures. I'll keep you guys posted and thank you for the support. Incase I have questions I'll further ask along the way.
I have a wedding in Chicago for a second cousin and then visiting my brother in Miami, and I'll make sure I visit the largest Porsche dealer in volume in all the Americas along the way. There's a car museum that has a 959 and the Testarosa from Miami Vice I'll sure I'll visit.

Make sure your music system does what you need it to do, My IPOD connection was disconnected on my trip to the east coast last year, by time I found a good radio station it was usually gone in 3 songs.
Great cars for road trips.
Have fun.

Here's another one for you that I never thought of before I took a newly purchased one 7,000 miles last year from Vancouver to Mexico to Wash DC...
The tires had great tread. But I didn't check the manufacturing date. Turns out they were 10 years old. After a very high speed blowout in the desert outside Taos, I pulled all the tires off the rims. There were handfuls of burnt rubber inside each tire. The tire guy told me this is a very common failure, as many older tires go from the inside. If you have the time, pull a tire off and check the inside condition.
Before I left, I had the car in a shop. We replaced fan belts and radiator hoses. Checked all the fuel lines and then brake lines. My biggest mistake was not replacing the vacuum lines. When the engine got really hot, on several occasions the old lines hardened up and let go. Quite fun tracking down why the car ran like crap.
I would also second the extra relays. Saved my bacon when my lights went out at 3 am in the high plains of Colorado.
I also made up a relay jumper with a short piece of 16a wire and a few male 1/4" spade terminals. My FP relay ended up being random.
And definitely do the fuel filter. There is all sorts of crap in older station's storage tanks out there.
But the most important is to have a good stereo. Makes the miles just melt away.

Three Wheelin'
Let me know when you are approaching Miami. I am in Fort Lauderdale area and maybe a small 928 get together could be arranged. There are a few other So Fla 928ers that we might be able to coax out for a lunch or beer and wings.
