TWO POSSIBLE SIZES?? - Aluminum Rack Bushings
1984 928S AMERICAN. BOUGHT SOLID ALUMINUM RACK BUSHINGS FROM 928 MOTORSPORTS, LLC.
Now this is not a criticism of 928 Motorsports, understand.
The instructions lead one to think that installing them is easier than it actually is (keeping in mind we are dealing with what amounts to classic cars and all the age implies).
None the less, I burned out the rubber bushings and cleaned up the mounting holes with a dremel (I'm surgical with those things).
The instructions say to tap in the aluminum mounts into the rack ears, but not all the way. Boy, it was easy to not tap them in....at all.
They are about 3/32" too large in diameter and will not index if i could swing a hammer under the chassis (without breaking the mounting ears or deforming the bushing-whichever comes first). I know they are supposed to fit tightly, understand.
Could it be that there are two sizes to these bushings, and has anyone else had this issue?

There is only one size for the holes in the rack. No one recommends using the aluminum ones anyway, why would you choose these?

Not shouting, Just HIGHLIGHTING. There are no outer metal sleeves on these stock bushings. I thought 928 Motorsports had a improved part, so I bought em. I had no idea that they were not recommended.

These are sacrificed to get them out but you get the idea.
If it's any consolation Walt, I have the solid mounts in mine...don't tell Sean.
Mainly, I saw the ad when I was a noob and thought aftermarket was better...
P.S., welcome to the Frat, remember that you wanted in...

I've been running the delrin ones in my rack for about 7 years now and have installed many of them. Great for when the rubber ones are crapped out and the rack is still good. Would never consider the aluminum ones.

crumpler, my mounts don't have those outer sleeves. The originals were perfect and very hard (but still flexible), but now are gone as I committed to the replacement. Could my bushings be a mid year or production line change? Are those outer sleeves Steel or aluminum? I will look under the car again, but the only way there could be sleeves if they were aluminum like the rack housing and recessed so that the flange shown in your pictures (with the split/cut) is flush with the rack ears.

I would think that the solid mounts don't transmit a noticeable increase in vibration being that the rack contacts the reinforcement directly which contacts the chassis directly. What is your experience, Crumpler?

Good morning Walt
Hey, I haven't seen any difference in performance with the aluminum ones, but it's a street driver only. I had just gotten my car and thought the concept of the rack being tighter was credible....and they looked really cool
I can't speak to the recommendations, but Sean is one of the best and knows his stuff. Basically, if he talks you want to listen.
I will say that I had the same experience putting mine in. I had fought the old ones out on my back, and went to put Carl's in and they didn't fit. I think i even called him about it. We discussed casting differences, but then a light went off and I crawled back under and was able to pry the jackets out. Then the mounts fit like a glove.
I can't say you didn't have some other aftermarket mount in the 84, but if they had the rubber component then I would assume stock and look again.
Regards.
