Default 1989 No Start issue...help needed.

My 89 has a problem. For awhile now every so often I have a no start. After it sits awhile ( hot or cold ) it would eventually start. Here lately it has run trebly when it first starts. Like the brain can not figure out what it needs....running real rich and missing. Blowing black smoke but after a few minutes it just smooth's out and is fine. Last 5 days this bad running time span has increased to 5 minutes or a little more. 2 days ago the car just would not start. Just turns over and shows NO SIGN of hitting. What I have checked so far...

1) Fuel pump is pumping gas.

2) I have spark

3) swapped over a known good LH and EZK.

What I noticed yesterday is when I pulled a spark plug wire off the plug the recess was almost full of oil. Oil up to half the plug projection out the head. Is it possible I have such a oil leak into the plug recesses that the spark plug wire to plug is not able to transfer spark? I pulled 2 plug wires off and cleaned what oil I could out and it was only then the motor starting sounding like it was trying to start.

sounds like you need new valve cover seals. there are 4 seals that seal the spark plug holes.

Number 24

this will stop the oil from getting in there...its not going to fix the other issue, unless your plugs are swimming in oil

Dean,
That oil getting around the spark plugs causes a misfire. Replacing the spark plug seals on the cam cover is your fix for this.

What does the tach do when you crank the engine on the starter?

Put your foot to the floor when you crank it Dean and see if it fires up. Call me in the morning.

I had the same issue type of problem, (it was an issue in the instrument cluster) that caused the tach wire to draw the current away from the LH. The Tach wire and the LH feed from the same EZK signal.

That said, this type of issue is pretty rare.

That sounds like a pain to diagnose. Glad you found it.

Good talking to you Sean....As I said...I did the " full throttle " with no luck. Hope its the temp sensor as you say. Should be here soon.

Interested in this comment regarding the temp sensor. Where is this located?. I want to rule this out of my 'no start' issue also.

thanks
