Hello, Introduction
Hello fellow 928 enthusiasts! I just joined on the free membership, and will upgrade to the 2 yr deal very soon. I'm 50, retired US Army (21 yrs, all active duty), and sort of stumbled into my 928 by chance! My car dealer asked me if I wanted a Porsche, yes, he really did! I thought it was a raffle ticket sort of deal which I would have supported, but, he owned it personally as he took it in trade, which, under his ownership had deteriorated very quickly from neglect, and incompetance. Well, needless to say, I got it for a very VERY good deal! It's a 1989 928S4, Guards Red, 5spd, Cashmere interior, etc. It didn't run, and had 'problems' of an unspecified nature. When I went to get it from a 'Bubba Mechanic' I found the Hood open and the spark plugs out, which condition it was in for like 3 yrs! Well, I have a shop (www.drblast.com) and a lift, and on the lift it went, the motor was full of water, I drained it, put some oil in it, installed a battery, and it cranks and has excellent oil pressure. Did a CR test, wildly all over the range of 10psi to 300psi.
My intent, and goal and end state is get this running, and drive it -- often! I was going to pull the engine, but, why just do that? I looked at my old 8mm videos I took of Zuffenhausen museum and factory which I personally took while stationed in Stuttgart and got excited remembering the workers pushing a semi-completed Body assembly from one bldg to another. That sight actually inspired me to make (to date) many Dolly's and many Rotisseries (all for my business and lusting customers wanting one for themselves, which I built for them numerous times). Well, as I said why just pull the engine...I'm taking the Body off the Drivetrain. I have a Dolly which I made to holster the Drivetrain (Engine, Torque Tube, Transmission, Rear End, and Suspension), and a Dolly for the Body with all the pieces in it (Glass, seats, electronics, etc). Intent is do a full service and assessment on all components, media blast the aluminum cast componants that make up the suspension, and of course the Engine Valve covers and Intake manifold which will go to Powder coating and the suspension parts will be glass beaded after Plastic media blasting and perhaps some clear coat on them to protect and keep the look clean.
I've made contact with Roger at 928sRus, and Greg Brown, all of whom are the go-to folks. I can't get over the fact that over the past 6 weeks of copious reading on this very forum, there is a member her that has over 1 million posts since 2001! That's over 200 a day! How this is possible is insane! It has to be an error, or, an amazing source of information!
I will be posting pictures and stories of my venture for you all to see and read about. One thing I have not been able to source here in this forum is anyone undertaking this very venture! Taking cars to this level is not a challenge for me at all, I do it all the time on Mopars, Fords, Alfa's, GM, etc. Many of the costs I'll internalize in my business. Well, thanks for the rich source of information here on rennlist.
Cheers!
Donny

Welcome! I don't think there is any state better than TX when it comes to owning a 928. Set a goal of having yours performing great by Third Coast. You will have a blast as you come to learn just how well these cars perform, plus meet some super people.

Donny,
You have quite a list of things in store for your car. You have a great in-state parts guy that will get you the right part, and since you are in-state, it could be next day. You also have the full collective knowledge of the Rennlist folk at your beckon call.
IMHO, I believe the 89 S4 to be the best S4 made.
You have a lot to do prior to Third Coast in November in Marble Falls. Get registered and then get busy!

Welcome from another Texan. 89 with 5 speed. Are we sure it's not a GT? First look at the redline on the tach. If it's 6200 that's S4. If it's 6600 that's a GT chassis. Next, get the engine code off the front flat block near the water bridge. Check for the code and post it here. Next, look under the rear hatch carpet for a square tag with all the option codes. Post them here, and we'll know more about what you have.
Correct colors, and 5 speed make it a valuable car once set up right. Since you are a media blaster, you're going to be quite popular around here. In fact, I have some bits I might be sending you for some cleanup soon.
Keep us informed, and when you can:

Donny - welcome to the tank! I'm hella jealous of the fact that you have a lift and a shop at your disposal. Will come in very handy in all the adventures that lie ahead of you.
Regarding your comment below - it's entirely possible that someone with uber perms here on the board inflated the comment count a bit
