Default Expansion Tank

Good Morning All,

Where does the small hose at the top (by the cap) of the expansion tank connect? 87S4.

Does it connect to anything at all?

Not that I have ever seen, it just vents to the ground in front of the Firewall, it's the over flow hose.

Overflow hose points down and goes nowhere.

I've been tempted to lengthen it some, and try to route it out and away from the exhaust. As supplied, it barely goes down past the bottom of the reservoir.

it is not really an expansion tank , that reservoir believes with all it's heart and soul that it is part of the radiator and the highest part too. It vents air bubbles from the radiator top and also the thermostat housing and engine , the whole system including the reservoir is pressurized. The little short hose is as noted the vent ....to which an expansion tank could be fitted if there were more room.

Jim, I very seldom disagree with you on extremely important stuff like this, but...

Since there's a designed-in compressible vapor space in the top of the reservoir, I believe it qualifies as an expansion tank. I've tried packing the reservoir with fluid all the way to the top, and for some reason liquid level "normalizes" someplace within an inch or so above the seam.

Seems we're comparing "expansion tank" to "overflow tank." An overflow tank would be unpressurized and catch ejected coolant during operation and, often, allow the coolant to be drawn back in when the engine cools.

Agreed it IS an expansion tank...... but not an overflow. And yes both often get mislabeled and many aftermarket tanks are sold as "both" depending on how you plumb it I was incorrect too !! So expansion tank it is....

I've settled on "coolant reservoir" as my non-controversial nomenclature. I should probably blow the dust off the WSM's and see what the factory's English translation might be.

My mother was an English major, with undergrads in journalism and literature. As we both aged a little, and after all those years of her best efforts plus those of the Sisters of Christian Cruelty... It was amusing to watch her grimace as I purposely tortured the language. I was her rotten son, it turned out.
