Has anyone successfully swaped an auto transmission for a manual? 89 S4.

My 93 GTS4 was converted from auto to an 85 5 speed, apparently with an aftermarket two disc clutch. I think the clutch needs to be properly adjusted because it is very hard to shift into first or reverse when it is running. Otherwise I would say that it is a successful conversion.

In addition I have almost all the parts from a very low miles 89 5-speed to swap into my 87 or 88 S4 auto that is going to be radically customized. The change to 5-speed will be part of it.

define successful .... but yes several cars have been converted. It requires lots of now very expensive valuable parts but is pretty simple to do. Best is to buy a wrecked 5 speed so you have everything or as mentioned above buy a 5 speed car and sell your automatic... The converted car will not be as valuable to collectors if that matters.
The 6 speed Corvette transmission conversion is also an option for some....

I've done it. 91 auto to 3 pedal. Accept for the stupid clutch it's fine. Whatever you do don't put a gt3 clutch in there no matter who recommends it. Expensive and harsh as you can imagine.
Choose your installer carefully.

A gentlemen (honerboy/Brian) over on Pelican changed his 84 to a stick, parts came out of his disassembled 79 and parts I sent him from my 78. He didn't seem to have much problem, he's retired and just changed it over at his leasure. Probably took him a couple week or so, but last I heard he was driving around...granted he was still having some issues with the speedometer then.

Brian.

Thanks to all of you. First response seems like the best advice. Leave well enough alone and buy a manual car.
