Congratulations, welcome and all that. I've never really worked on my 928 myself in the 5+ years I've owned it, so don't worry too much. In Texas you've got people. As for crazy car-buying moves, it could be worse. You could have bought a 1980 Lamborghini! AHAHAHAHA! Now *that* would be hard to deal with.

Welcome to the group. Texas is a good place to have a 928. Names you will want to know are Sean Ratts and Roger.
Sean specializes in servicing 928's and is based in the Dallas area. Roger can source all the 928 parts you are searching for (www.928sRus.com).
Roger also sponsors the annual 928 gathering each year known as 3rd coast in Marble Falls. This year it's November 11-13. We pretty much take over the entire hotel so call soon if you want to book a room.

Hello all!
First off, I'd like to thank everyone for your patience and your replies. I took it all to heart. I started with the link you gave gleaned many a pearl of wisdom. The owners manual is of course key, and I'm checking the oil religiously.
Updates:
1). The AC is working great! At least my mechanic seems to have gotten that right. Incidentally, I kick myself for not making him eat the $90 I spent replacing the AC fan that I know he broke leaning over to work on the ducting (the old fan didn't have a protective cage).
2). My worrying was for naught over the electrical problem I assumed he had introduced. If you recall, when I picked up the car from the mechanic for AC work, he was charging the battery. It has sat for 2 weeks and starts with a roar.
3). When I picked it up, the radio, clock and car phone wouldn't power up. Seems that it was just a blown fuse. No prob.
So all seems to be going much better in my Porsche world. I just need a mechanic in Austin, Texas I can trust. The only other downer is that there is a nasty lil tear on the driver's seat behind my left shoulder. When I bought it, it was covered with that crappy, pasty patch stuff. I should have known it wouldn't last at all. It particularly bothers me because it is the only real problem with the interior. At this point, I can't see myself springing for new upholstery on two seats.
Again, thank you all so much. It's nice knowing you all are out there. I know you like pictures. I'll post some tomorrow. That and my gratitude are the least I can do.
Race on,
Mario

Hello Mario,
I'll repeat that Matt is a good guy at "practical Porsche repair." To be fully accurate, he was when I lived in Austin from '89 to '03. He was a 928 driver back then, too. Certainly worth checking out.

Gradcundulations. Pics!
TPWS is a great place. Did the clutch on my GTS while road tripping to 3rd coast one year. Worked it in within a day and had it done the same day and that included getting the parts!

Welcome to Rennlist and your Shark.
When you say you're not mechanically inclined, you probably mean that you're just not experienced. Have no fear, you've come to the right place! I'm not a particularly good wrench, but I can follow instructions and someone on this forum has done literally everything you will ever need to do on your car. Just get yourself a halfway decent set of metric sockets and wrenches and you'll be fine.
Also: You need to make it to the gatherings. They're the best part of owning a Shark!

Welcome. You've found the right place.
I own a 1980 A/T as well. I found it locally and just couldn't resist. The car was a mess (still is in many ways). I had never worked on cars before I purchased it. I've spent the last couple years replacing everything rubber on the car. I've learned a lot and now do most all my maintenance on my other cars. I have not had a question that folks here could not answer.

Thanks for your help, everyone. Greatly appreciated. Now that I've got a mechanic, I'll sleep a lil better at night. Taking her in for a lil check-up at TPWS and looking into re-apholstering my "shark's" seats.
You guys are great!
