The Saga of Warm Air Conditioning
Lately there seems to be several posts concerning air conditioners not blowing cold air. I too had the same problem after installing a new compressor and dryer in my 88 S4. I was very disappointed with the entire affair.
I found a posting at Dwayne's Garage about troubleshooting the HVAC system to determine if the flaps, actuators and solenoids were all working correctly. Dwayne, thank you for your expert write-up. The only credit I can take is being able to follow Dwayne's detailed instructions.
Following Dwayne's troubleshooting guidance I found I had two leaking actuators and three leaking solenoids. The actuators were the foot well actuator and the defroster actuator. With expert guidance from Roger, I received all the parts required to replace all the bad units.
And the result, today I have cold air blowing out of my system with R-134a in the system. More importantly, my wife will ride with me.
My two cents from this adventure is, make sure the entire HAVC is operating properly before resorting to more extreme measures. It is possible to have cold air conditioning, using R-134a, in a properly operating HVAC system
