Default Water leak, new one on me.

Been chasing a water leak for a few weeks, wasn't loosing much but as far as I could tell it was coming from the rear of the engine but couldn't see anything leaking, I could see some coolant drips on the rear edge of the belly pan on the passenger side below the heater valve. So today I decided to have another look, I carefully removed the rear belly pan, there was some coolant on the passenger side of the pan.

I then drove the car to warm it up, back in the garage I gave the heater valve a prod, I had my nose in there looking to see if I could see a leak when there was like a mini explosion and I'm covered in hot water and steam, after I recovered my composure! I could see what had happened, the tubular pipe that the short hose fits on to had come out of the housing that bolts to the cylinder head, I guess this tubular insert must of been working its way out and that where the leak was.

that's a new one on me too. Usually the short hose fails.

Something else to look forward to with age - urrgh! As if there was not enough to keep up with.

Now a question of whether to "repair" or "replace".

Porsche is getting better at this kind of failure, they have it down to under 15 years with the 996 and 997's.

seems a JB weld repair would be sufficient for that metal sleeve.

Less than 10 with the 957 Cayenne.



JB Weld is the generally accepted fix for the 957. Replacing the whole part is an "engine out" job.

I've cleaned up the surfaces, applied some JB weld and pressed the sleeve back in for the time being.

Porsche has two versions of that. I usually replace it with the one piece version but have JB Welded ones in the field as a quick fix. Seems to hold up fine.

928 104 713 02 is the updated single-piece part. This failure is becoming more-and-more common as the original press-fit adapter fatigues from heat cycles.

I also cleaned up my original two-piece part and JB welded it together. I haven't used it, and it's free to anyone that wants it if you don't mind paying the shipping. I can post pictures of the part if anyone is interested. Personally I like the one-piece design better, but I also hate junking a part that someone could use if desired -- even as a backup.

Also if after you use JB or replace with the one piece unit, there is a gasket under the piece where it bolts onto the block. If your repair with JB is good and you have a little trickle in that area consider the gasket. If you're going to replace unit, be sure to have one.
