To buy or not to buy...
Hi All, question for the forum, what views on a potential purchase of a 944 S2 cabriolet? Car is what the trade would call honest, needs new dashboard and seat cushions and covers. Also some detailing of switchgear etc. 110k verifiable miles showing, solid mechanically. Would the car disappoint when alongside 993, 997, and 981 generation cars? The 944 would seem to be quite a unique offshoot within the Porsche experience. Comments and opinions welcome, thanks so much!

944s were entry level models when they were being produced. The S2 is a higher end 944 with more HP and torque and they drive well. There really is no comparison between a 993, 987, or 997 - all of those are considerably faster and we're quite a bit more expensive when new and still are. A very nice S2 cab manual is worth about $15k. A normal 993 about 4-5x that, a 987 about 2x and a 997 about 3x.
They're fun cars for what they are, look cool, drive well, handle great, and have that classic Porsche vibe, so sure, buy one if it fits what you're looking for.

I feel that the S2 cabriolet is a pretty rare sight these days (they never were really common!)
Although not truly a collector car, it is pretty special IMO, and I think the S2 is really the best 944 for general pleasure driving. Like with all old cars, condition and maintenance history all make a big difference. If the car is sound mechanically, and the tub is rust-free, then I think the car has real intrinsic value. If you do get it, just make double sure all the maintenance "gotchas" (chain tensioner, timing belt and over-engine fuel lines) are checked off, and then enjoy and improve.
