Rebuilding a 944 engine
Hey my name is Tony and I am 16 and I just got my 84 944 it is one sweet car.
It needs some help like paint, carpet, and other small things. I got it for a amazing $2,200.
I was thinking of rebuiding the engine this winter. I wanted to know if any one has done that and if so how hard was it, how long did it take, and how much it cost.
Also I have a parts car with some things to sell ask me if there is any thing you want I will sell it realy cheap.

Welcome Tony.
What makes you think the engine needs a re-build? These engines are pretty bullet-proof if well cared for. Is the car running poorly?
The first thing you should do is replace the timing & balance shaft belts, unless you were given records that they have been recently serviced.
As for the engine re-build, do a compression/leak-down test and go from there. Also, check here:
www.clarks-garage.com for a lot of good write-up's on maintenance issues. You'll also find that the members here at rennlist can be a very valuable source of great information.
Good luck!

Idles at 900/950rpm, slightly rough until it's good and warm. Remember, this is a fairly large displacement 4 cylinder. Your car may just need new plugs/wires/cap/rotor. Many varialbles here.
How many miles on your car?

tony,
I agree, unless something bad has happened to you car in the past, i don't think it should need a rebuild. There are plenty of turbo guys with motors with 150,000+ miles that are still running plenty strong. And turbo guys stress their motors wayy more. I would agree with Ron and look through all the "support systems" of your engine. Replacing the plugs/wires/cap/rotor are a great place to start. I recommend http://www.magnecor.com/ for their wires. Also if you need to get any parts for your 944 I recommend www.paragon-products.com they have great prices and great service. The owner has a 968 turbo RS, 1 of 4 made. :-D
Good luck, and enjoy porsche ownership. It's a blast.

Mine feels sluggish lately... aside from the warmer weather being a factor. I do know that the head was "rebuilt"... by that, I mean when I change the spark plugs there's epoxy lining the tube over cylinder 2. This is probably an inhibition on power, isn't it?
