Default 944 Turbo Cup Wheels

Hi all

I have a set of Magnesium 944 turbo cup wheels which I'm looking to sell.

They're in good condition and have recently been refurbished.

Any idea what a fair asking price is for these? I've seen crazy amounts asked but I'm not sure what they actually sell for.

Thanks
Tim

Nice wheels. Strong and light. I've just had 3 sets stripped and crack tested and all came through good. Concerns about degradation of these wheels seems to be a little overstated.

Also had an original unpainted set (and one with the original finish under a respray) and was able to get an accurate match of the pearl white for the front face. The original white was not the VW pearl white reported elsewhere. The barrels and rear of the wheel were satin white and the hub area was left in primer finish.

That's good to hear beamishnz. You plenty of horror stories about Magensium wheels but I've never had any issues, even on my BBS E28's

I've seen a lot of broken E26s, so the BBS cast mag centers do have a life expectancy, but the mag cup phone dials seem to last. Haven't heard of any breaking not due to accident damage.

It was interesting Jim. I had them media blasted before testing and was expecting some issues especially since one set had had quite a lot of abuse but all 12 were deemed structurally sound by the testing lab. One had a tiny area of porosity patch - less then 10mm in a non structural area which the lab thought was from the original casting and one had a tiny 5mm crack on the outside of the hub centre section which again was not seen to be structural.

@beamishnz -- raising this thread from the grave -- would you mind sharing the paint code and finish (satin?) you ended up matching to the original finish wheels? I have a set of cup wheels I'm looking to refinish and all I've found is the Audi/VW <!--td {border: 1px solid #cccccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->L0A9 pearl white mentioned. Thanks!

I went through this in 2008 when I refinished a set of mag phone dial cup wheels. The Audi loa9 color is very tan but Porsche believe it or not actually used a lotus esprit 1987-1990 color it’s pearl so 3 part paint p02 I believe it is. I have a little left prob dried up bye now. But there’s a base color then a pearl mid clear then you clear it. So when stripping the wheels down you’re actually going to put 4 layers of paint on with primer!

but the paint does pop and it’s very subtle with the pearl and it can look like it has a hair of green in certain light it’s cool!

Excellent -- thank you so much @boost feen ! Just in time too, as they were dropped off at the painters yesterday. The wheels (and car -- a Canadian spec 87 951) are coming to the Bay area in June so you may get to see them in person sometime. Cheers!

Oh nice glad to help yeah I painted 3 sets in one day, took about 1/2 gallon of the base and a quart of the mid pearl and 1/2 gal clear to do all 12 wheels. one was mine the other two were John Manelis in Napa he owned and raced in the local pca a ‘88 rothmans car sponsored bye en route I believe. But alas he sold the car about 6 years ago to Ron Gruner who worked at Jerry woods now at Canepa

I ended up with one of those sets of John's wheels.
