Default How much to add ABS to non-ABS 1987 Turbo

Finally got the kinks worked out of my 3.0L turbo build and have a running track car. So I flat-spotted a set of tires worse than I ever have. ABS and a tad more aero are for sure the last frontier for this car.

It probably won’t happen - I’ve been scared away from doing this before but it’s been awhile since I’ve thought about it. The car is completely stripped so running and accessing wiring is easy. Maybe someone has a complete set of components to sell me to add ABS. Tell me it’s way to much time and effort so I can forget this idea and move on.

Separate Control Module, Special Hubs, pickup/sensors, wiring harness pieces.

My SWAG is probably around 600-1200 in parts depending on who much you need + labor/head scratching to get it all to come together.

YMMV

If you do get to it, go with boxter abs computer/pump.

The ABS from that era isn't that good. Most guys I knew use to remove the abs fuse on track any way. I wouldn't bother.

You could pick up a nice used E46 BMW MK60 ABS unit and retrofit it.

You would be better served buying a "Parts car" of that's the route you want to go.. My ABS hasn't worked since I turned it into a racecar.. would have been nice to have in the rain.. True the abs kinda stinks in that era.. Even the factory Turbo-cup cars had a "Reset" switch in them... in Scott Goodyear's in-car video of Mont-Tremblant he has to re-set the abs several times during the race.. the big red "!" Light keeps coming on in his car..

The Cup cars have a switch to turn it off or on, not simply to reset. Switching it back on does incorporate a reset to the circuit though.

FWIW, the Cup cars did have an issue with the rear hub deflecting enough where the tone ring would be out of spec for the magnet.

If you're going to bother, get a motorsport unit and have it coded for your setup.

I think the fever has passed. Way too much work regardless of cost. Car is fun as is. First time I've flat-spotted and ruined a set of tires, fortunately they were pretty heat-cycled out anyway which is probably why they locked up. I had driver's window open and passenger closed (thin Lexan) creating a vacuum in the cockpit - my shift boot was loose and the cabin filled with tire smoke pulled in from under the car - never had the inside of the car suddenly fill with smoke while on track so it was a little disorienting. Both windows down from now on. Thanks for the thoughts/advice.

Edit: For sure the tires locked up because I hammered the brake pedal trying to catch up to a car ahead of me, so much for that! Driver error. But it was made easier by the state of the tires. I enjoyed seeing the long black streaks entering the corner for the rest of the day.

One big thing to mention is that ABS equipped 944’s had the front passenger rear wheel well wall recessed with mounting holes to hold the mammoth ABS pump. So it’s not easy if it’s not and ABS chassis 944 and you want to use 944 ABS parts.

Maybe removing the windshield washer reservoir would provide enough space for the ABS pump.

You might be able to find some info on one of Tony G's threads about converting to the Boxter ABS system...but iirc, that had it's challenges and he possibly had to give up on that.
It's more complex than just slapping on another car's unit.

Just curious... I know ABS was standard in the 88 Turbo S and 89 Turbo, but how common or rare is ABS on regular 87 or 88 Turbos? Only curious as I have an 88 with ABS and it was like a $2200 option so my guess is rare.

Any more details on that? I thought it's all good and dandy in that (boxter) department..

Fwiw I came across <this article> about the inadequacies of stock abs on modified cars and about retrofitting a tunable ”motorsports” abs.
