Default Hondabond 4

I’m reinstalling balance shaft covers and am awaiting arrival of an order with loctite 574 that has been delayed.

I have new tubes of Hondabond 4 which I’ve heard being very good as a substitute. I’ve searched and can’t find any direct references to use for balance shaft covers. It seems the fit the bill: anaerobic, non-silicone. Any feedback that would indicate that I should wait another week for the loctite 574 to arrive.

Is this a metal on metal application without any gasket used? If so I'd wait.

Good stuff Info here

Thanks
Mike G.

Thanks Mike. It is a metal on metal sealing. The description for the hondabond 4 matches the 574 description and is used for sealing flanges without gaskets.

I have done the top cover and will see about leakage. My schedule may dictate that the bottom one doesn’t get done until I receive the 574 so I’ll probably wait and have good data to share on which is better.

I changed my mind. I think it will be fine with the Honda stuff. But there is a slight difference as the Honda stuff states it only semi cures where the Loctite stuff states it fully cures. But since the Honda stuff is used for motorcycle engine cases mostly I think it should be fine.

I would try the Hondabond on the balance shaft covers if you can't get Loctite 574 ... although not on the crank girdle when reassembling an engine.
Threebond is something i use on snowmobile engines when i put them back together , guessing it's the same properties as the Hondabond !

Cheers
Phil

*** EDIT ***
Did you check with a Fastenal retailer in Ontario , they carry Loctite 574 ... might be an option ?

I used it on balance cover. Also on that rear plug on the bottom balance cover, I didn't feel like taking that one off. No leaks.

I found out I can get 574 at Fastenal, but with a large tube already on order, I’ll hold off.

The upper cover with the hondabond appears to have been sealed well after curing overnight. I understand that hondabond 4 is the same as threebond and yamabond; they’re all made by threebond now. I’ll likely seal the lower cover with it as well now. I’m not pulling the girdle, just doing rod bearings and sump gasket after I finish on the top end, so no worries there.

Thanks all.

A little late to the party, but I used Yamabond 4 for my girdle and balance shafts 20 years ago (70k miles) and they stayed perfectly sealed.

I appreciate the endorsement for the 574 alternative. 20 years for any sealant is pretty impressive.

Ditto on the Yamabond. Used it on my oil pan girdle re-install.

Just for additional info: Loctite 515 is for machined metal to metal joints and cleans up easily.
