Default Door Speaker Replacement

I have a 1986 944 Turbo and the original radio (Blaupunkt Monterey SQR 23) has never worked. I have been searching for a cheap, easy to install radio and I will keep the original for the next owner if he wants to refurbish or replace. I just want to (infrequently) listen to the radio once in awhile. I finally found one on Crutchfield. I then decided that I might as well replace the 35 year old door speakers. I am confused . . . a sales rep at one of the more recognizable Porsche parts sites tells me there are three speakers on my door. I even gave him my VIN and he verified what I have. he says there is a tweeter, mid-range and base. I went out and looked again. There is only one speaker cover that measures 4 3/8 X 6 5/8". Can someone tell me what I am looking for to replace these two speakers? Thanks, Mike

Crutchfield should be able to give you the options for those speakers.

I can only imagine the parts geek is thinking of the 10 speaker version.

Co-axial speakers (2 in one). Tri-axial speakers (3 in one).

Default 3D spacers

Anyone 3D print spacers for place between the door ans the speaker mounting holes? They could be painted. I have the right color for linen. There is a decent gap between the grille cover and the side of the dash. Haven’t measured but had to be 1/8”. Would love to throw some kappas in the door and mount with a spacer…use factor my order infinity grill covers

I installed these https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206DSC...04.html?tp=105

it says they don’t fit but they fit perfectly without a spacer and they sound great.

this is the head unit I have with them

It depends. There are a lot of variables. You have to be careful about what people post that works on forums and when they did it. Crutchfield is generally wrong about what fits a 944. Tweeter, mid-range and bass sounds like the upgraded stock system. With the equalizer. The 87-88 have wide speaker grills. You have the narrower ones. To my knowledge presently, without modification, RetroSound is the only speaker that fits. There was an older Alpine, infinity and Blaupunkt, but those have been long discontinued. 4x6 is a bad speaker size for audio quality, no matter who makes it. The rears usually denigrate first. You’ll love replacing those when you have too. It’s a very hard car to upgrade for audio.

My Pioneers sound good but the grill cover bulges a little. I want to maybe go with these RetroSounds. Just wish I could find a "spacer" to put between the speaker and the grill to prevent the bulge.

I have a box from Klain Industries to put an 8" JL in the passenger side wheel well, and Im putting a RF Punch 200 amp in the driver's side. I think with the sub, the 4x6 will be fine. Im not an audiophile but like my music to sound good.

I agree with everything Flea3 says here, especially this last quote.

I replaced the front and rear speakers and then added the KLA Industries subwoofer box with the recommended 8" JL Audio and Alpine amp. This final upgrade was transformational. I'd highly recommend it. The door speaker replacement by itself made very little difference or improvement. Even after the rear speaker replacement the sound improvement was marginal.

I know you said that you will only infrequently listen to the radio once in a while, but IMO getting it to work includes making it sound good.

Here's what I added to the KLA subwoofer box.
JL Audio 8W1v3-4 W1v3 8-inch Subwoofer Driver
Alpine MRV-M500 Mono V-Power Digital Amplifier

Whatever you end up doing, I'd advise you not to throw the Monterey in the bin. Sell it on ebay or here to someone. Lots of folks want them for spare parts.

My first 944 was an 86. One of the chain audio stores had a plate for the front door. It fit between the door the side of the dash. Then they just mounted the speaker with its cover onto the plate. It looked stock like and allowed a pioneer 3 way which was the best sounding 4x6 I’ve ever heard. I should have kept that plate when I sold the car, but I doubt I’ll ever own another 944. Maybe you could get something like that fabricated at a local audio store.

I am lucky in that I have a cabriolet and can fit 6.5" component speakers up front. Is there really no room in the coupes for components up front? Even 5.25" ones? In the rear I have a box with 6x9 speakers in it and the 4 way amp mounted on it. This covers 20hz-20000hz. Most 8"subs do not go down to 20hz, that is why I have 6x9 speakers and not 8" sub (do have an Alpine 8" sub for sale!) Eventually I will delete the rear seat and move 6x9 and amp down there.
