Default Wishbone/control arm differences

Hey all,

While dropping my ('89 951)'s engine for a re-seal and all the sundry "while I'm here.."'s, one of the surprises I ran into was mismatched wishbones. One is a 951 (951.341.150.10) p/n, the other a 944 (944.341.149.02). They're pretty much identical beyond an unused boss on the 944 numbered arm. Any reason I shouldn't just clean these up, rebuild em, and put them back?

Looking around I can probably find replacements fairly cheap, but figured I may as well ask here first!

The casting PN changed at some point in production. No issue running a mismatch as long as they're the same offset. The boss was used to hold an air deflector "scoop" for brake cooling on later models.

AFAIK the air deflector is a 968 part, and the 968 arms ball joint isn't as easy to replace.

Can't believe I forgot: pictures. Thanks for the input, guys! I ended up finding a friendly local who offered up some matching spares anyway

The control arm with the 'green dot' is from a M030 suspension - either 88 or 89. As such, the rear rubber bushing is a firmer rubber compound.

Another suggestion is to replace the original caster blocks with the newer 968 caster blocks. As they newer versions have less rubber, they provide better handling. I also believe the original versions of these are no longer available.

Part of the reason they're off to begin with! I was wondering about the paint marks, though. Good to know! This is from a 1989 US 951, so M030.

The bosses being for a later model makes sense now - looking at the casting marks the left side arm (944 p/n) seems to have been made in 2001! The 951 arm here is an original from 1987.

Edit: this would also explain why the left arm's ball joint is in reasonable condition
