Default Another 951 Noob

I'll save my questions for the search, but I would just like to say Hi-

I am a current BMWCCA/SCCA member, looking to part with my trusted e36 325is and move into the 951 realm... I'm currently in the searching/planning phases of my porsche ownership- I've been told to take my time and make sure I don't rush into things.

I'm looking for a 88 or 89 951 S, I'm going to keep the car fairly close to stock I think (maybe an Authothority Chip/airflow If I determine they won't hurt reliability too badly) but that's about it for the time being, I'm just looking for a weekend Rt 1 (coastal highway)/Autocross car to fall in love with.

If autocross is your game then you might look in the direction of a S2 or a 968. Unless your realy good at trailbraking/boostbuilding your autocross times will suffer. If your rush is boost then your in the right place.

Jump on the 88s for $10k, you won't see another at that price for a VERY LONG TIME.

Welcome, as Jason noted, it may be worth while to look at the 88S that is for sale below. Also, the consensus appears to be that you can do better than Autothority...

Eh, I'm more interested in having a good time at an autocross than I am turning in good times, and the 951s strike me as being more fun in the twisties...

I've got an email and phone message in on the 88s... we'll see if he gets back to me.

As for Autothority, I say them only because they're all I know right now- I plan on doing some good research here before deciding what exactly I'm going to do.

As for the search - if you don't ****** up that Silberossa one before it's gone, the best virtue in The Search is patience, maintaining it and holding out for the right car.

ian's car is still available too I think - check out the classifieds.

If your going for a turbo, go 86 or 87. Less turbo lag, and lighter. True, not as good of suspension, but probably better for autox. But the n/a's would be the best choice for autox. Especially if you went with a 944 na which would be cheap, and would leave you more money to throw at suspension.

The 86s have less lag than a Turbo S?..
Where did you get that from?

the turbo is smaller. although tuned right it wouldnt make a huge difference, but there IS a difference from everything ive read.

I must admit that I am mostly interested in the Turbo-S for its stock suspension/balance than I am its power - I figure either way power is easy to add - but a nice suspension up front is worth it...

just me though - I dunno - I'll look at some non-S's and seeif its worth the difference

The bits that the turbo S comes with are going to be worn out if they have not recently been replaced. In the aftermarket, it's quite easy to get components superior to the turbo S stuff.

Depending on the intended use of the car, the turbo S could very well be worth it, but it sounds like you want it for the parts that most likely would need replacement at this point...

The 951S usually brings too much of a premium to modify it. You spend ~$10k on a stock S, or ~$6-7k on a nonS and put the remaining money into modifications.
