Default just a heads up post, parting out s2 engine soon

my s2 has some scoring on the bores of 2 cylinders and i will be yanking the motor and replacing with a turbo motor. i know that you guys like to use the crank for stroker motors but i'm not sure if anything else is useful. everything from the motor is still available as this is my first post on the topic. if i don't hit too many snags, i'm expecting to have the motor out in a week or so. i'm expecting that the crank will be ok, as i've seen no evidence of rod bearing failure. i'm not sure exactly what these go for but i figured i'd get the word out for whoever might want it for a winter project.

it will be a bit...involved. pulling and replacing the engine should go smoothly but there will be some extra engineering done. if possible, i don't intend to locate the turbo under the intake manifold - i'd like to keep it on the exhaust side. also, there will be some intercooler tricks and none of the routing of the piping will be stock. i hope to create a cleaner and more functional engine bay that makes the car a bit easier to work on. i've seen the repair times for the turbo and i'm guessing the porsche engineers were thrilled to create a car they didnt' have to work on

Good luck. I had this aspiration once. It will be quite an endeavor. If you do accomplish it, you will be my hero.

BTW what are you asking for the crank?

i'm not actually sure what to ask for it. i tried to post as soon as possible to give people time to plan around using it. an engine rebuild like that's no small thing so i figured the sooner i let people know, the more likely they'd be able to work it into their winter project. is there a generally accepted going rate for it? i've actually just had someone inquire about the shortblock itself. i know the s2 stuff is worth a good bit more than the 951 stuff because of rarity but i don't know where to price it. so yes, i'm actually asking for pricing advice from the people i intend to sell to

Are the cyliners connected together on the S2 motor, like they are on the 968? And does it have oil squirters like the 968? How bad is the scoring?

Yes I emailed you (via rennlist) earlier today. Drop me a PM.

Tom, yes the S2 is similar to the 968 except no oil squirters.

it will be a bit...involved. pulling and replacing the engine should go smoothly but there will be some extra engineering done. if possible, i don't intend to locate the turbo under the intake manifold - i'd like to keep it on the exhaust side.
You will have to do the following:
Make custom headers
Remove windsheild washer items
Remove headlight assemblies (go to fixed position)
May have to cut out a small part of the strut mount (depends on how you make the exhaust)
Relocate igntion coil
Lose PS
Run oil cooled only turbo (or move all the plumbing for the water)
Relocate the oil line to run oil to the turbo
There is more

This isnt that difficult of a job but it is a costly one. I have been looking at doing it for some time but the costs exceed the total value of the car I am working on. Nothing terrible complex about it, spool up should be very good, and you can run a massive turbo (as big as you can fit in the area you are working on). Before someone says Callaway did X, they used a very small turbo and were not trying to make a lot of HP.

also, there will be some intercooler tricks and none of the routing of the piping will be stock. i hope to create a cleaner and more functional engine bay that makes the car a bit easier to work on. i've seen the repair times for the turbo and i'm guessing the porsche engineers were thrilled to create a car they didnt' have to work on
Of the hundreds of cars I have worked on it is by far the worst, most complex engine bay I have ever seen. There is nothing on the car that is easy to work on.

I have to be honest, if your goal is cleaner engine bay you may be better/cheaper off to use a turbo kit, like Vitesse sells and get a custom intake. It makes that part of the car much more accessible.

A custom intake and v band clamps on the turbo, helps alot !! Moving the turbo on the other side is not worth it on a street car..
ps- Matt, You around today?

Yes, I am around. I figured out why the RX was running like crap. One of the plugs was just about broken in half, you can imagine where that is going, as soon as the wrench touched it WAS broken in half, of course threaded into the rotor housing. Wanna pull and rebuild a 13B Rotary this weekend?
