Default Ultimate Cheap Maintenance/ Mod Thread

Thought this would be useful for new guys, like myself. The fact is, our cars aren't getting any newer, and sometimes replacing something simple that has deteriorated can make a big difference. Knowing what to check out can help us water-pumper newbies get our cars as close to 100% as possible, at least for a Porsche. Anyway, I'm thinking along the lines of "I replaced my fuel filter and got another 5mpg", or "Throttle body gasket gained me 5psi boost". Also, maybe we could expand it to cheap mods too, if a short shift kit made your car shift Honda smooth, post your feedback. Cheaper stuff though, obviously a Stage 2 Vitesse kit is going to make a difference.

I heard that if you put a big yellow porsche sticker in your back window, you will get around 20 WHP extra....

This is a great idea, if it gets abundant enough, maybe it should be stickied.

Seriously though, I think most of the general tune-up and problem solving on our cars has been well and truly covered SOMEWHERE on the board. It's just a question of finding it, and collating it.

Who wants to volunteer.....? (He says, slowly retreating outside for a cigarette)

I figure there's literally hundreds of potential keywords you could search, returning thousands of threads, and though I do waste too much time on here, I don't have THAT much to spare. Plus, I'm shooting for the stuff that made a difference, and was worth the time and money.

That said, how much HP will a Rennlist sticker AND Japanese symbols, combined with neon lights gain me?

I still feel one of my biggest bangs for the buck was a new wastegate (Tial) But if your car is stock or even chipped the fuel map wont be right anymore as you can hold more boost to redline causing a possible lean situation...

Iceshark aux ground cable is a worthwile addition and quite cheap. The rest of his cables get spendy, but are well worth it, too.

First thing to add on any 951, in my opinion, is a new wastegate unless you are positive yours is working correctly. A wastegate, a vacuum line update deleting the cv and a manual boost controller will find you gobs of lost power. Chips are a no brainer (Vitesse are the best, imo), and a 3" exhaust system with a cat bypass, and I think you have found all the easy hp, unless you have neglected maintenance items such as spark plug wires, etc...

Regards,

Timing & balance shaft belts. Total cost: About 50 bucks. Potential cost due to failure? Pretty much the sky's the limit. It could cause everything from bent valves only (about $1,000) all the way to a new engine ($$$$$$$$!!!!)

Best thing to do is to replace ALL the vacuum hoses, lines, water hoses and various sensors. That alon would "wake up" a stock car completely

Vacuum lines (again),
Divertor valve (check by sucking on the tube out the top there should be resistance),
Wastegate shim or replacement (easier if you have removed it a couple of months back to shim).
Open the bonnet (hood?) at night and see if the plug leads are leaking - sparks.
check rotor and cap.
Keep to the servicing schedules
Use good oil
Drive it gently till warm
Drive it gently for 5 mins before shutting down.
Wheel alignment and replace shocks if original (MO30's may last longer).
Buy good tyres,
Dont abuse it from standing start get it rolling with clutch up before flooring it.

Enjoy

What MBC do you guys reccomend, and by adding one, I can eliminate the cycling valve?
Just curious, because I'm hoping to run a boost controller, and I don't really know a lot about them, or the cycling valve...
I just hear 1000 people saying the cycling valve is crap, and I wish to run a bit higher than stock boost.

I like to change the small coolent hose that comes directly out of the head. The 2 or 3 inch one with different size ends. This will take a beating if you use water wetter or purple ice because those products pull much more heat out of the head. I change every 2-3 years. I blew the hose in the middle of nowhere on a Sundy one time and had to use electrical tape to repair and limp home. I lost a head gasket because of it... Good Insurance!

A chip set with an MBC and wastegate shims is best bang for your buck hp bump by far. You can get over 50hp spending under $400, or spending under $200 if you can find used chips (generally around $100). Not a bad ratio IMO.
