Default 17mm Hex

Can someone tell me where is a good place to get a 17mm hex for the trans fill and drain plugs? Every place I call only goes up to 10mm.

Thanks

Checkers or Pep Boys. The ricers use these so you can get it chrome plate with an "R" on it too.

Sears carries them as well, sold individually.

Or just take a bolt with a 17mm head and insert it in the hex hole and put a nut on the bolt to turn the plug out. Works well and its pretty darn cheap!

You can make your own tool. Get a short metic bolt and a couple of nuts which all take
a 17mm wrench. Stack the nuts and tighten down real hard to lock them all together. It works best if you want plug weld the nut at the end. Sometimes just tightening them will not be
enough on a real tight plug.

You'd have to double nut to loosen the plugs, no? I tried this recently with the oil thermostat plug, and could not get get enough torque -- the threads on the bolt stripped eventually, at least with 8.8 hardware...

Also, if you have an air-cooled VW shop in town, they usually sell them too...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I may try it the DIY way first. Wish I had thought of that! Sears Hardware, Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Lowes, and NAPA around here only carry up to 10mm. If DIY doesn't look like it will work, I guess I will have to try Snap On or maybe Grainger?
