Default Cooling Fans staying ON

I have a car with the fans staying on High even with the car OFF. We took a fan relay (the big silver one) out of a good car and it did the same thing. We took the relay out of the bad car and put it in the good car and it did fine, so I don't think it's the relay.

When we crank the car the fans go to low, but stay ON. Once the car is turned OFF the fans go to HIGH. We have gotten the fans to go off by turning the key ON and OFF a few times quickly, but they sometimes turn back ON.

Any ideas?

...sounds like the thermal switch that is screwed into the radiator has failed. I think they're about $30-$40 at places like Pelican, etc...

It could be the relay that switches the fans to high when the air conditioning is on. Try swaping the relays for cooling fans and air conditioning, between the two cars. They are located in the fuse/relay box. Some of the positions have changed over the years, so double check that the part numbers of the relays are the same as they could have changed too.

Take the relay out and tap it against something (concrete floor works good). If the contacts inside are fused, that'll probably separate them and you'll be back in business. Happened to me about a month ago. Ahhhhh. I love $0 fixes.

Cool

about $10 for the standard and upwards of $18 for the lo temp.

both themostat and switch need to be the same for the lower temps.

it's the same switch vw rabbits used back in the 80's.
