Default Painting Center Caps

I have a set of center caps from my 89 951 that are a little dull. Has anyone tried to paint these yourself? How would one go by preparing the surface and what type of paint should be used? Thanks!

Wurth Silver Wheel paint is a perfect match for phone dials. Expensive, but looks perfect -- I used scotchbrite if I recall to scuff off the original pealing paint. I also tried hand painting the colors on the crest, but it looked like a carefully-done finger painting.

Wurth lacquer is perfect match, as Tom has stated. Here's a set I restored with hand painted crests and another set that I restored with polished crests. Both sets were painted with Wurth lacquer and also clearcoated.

Note hand painting the crests takes a considerable amount of time.

I did a search on here and used someones method by painting them with paint sticks purchased at wall mart. They turned out great and have held up well thru this winter.

It's that green plastic scouring pad stuff by 3M. I get them at my local supermarket in the cleaning section. You can get it by itself or as part of a sponge. For example: http://www.brightideas.com.au/?e=409&p=3m

Great info guys! Did you use any solution with the scotchbrite? Anything used to prepare the surface before Wurth's wheel paint? Where do you recommend buying Wurth's?

oi-punx,

what type of brush did you use to apply the paint? By the way your wheels look great!

I used Testor's gloss model paint with a tiny brush. Then I sprayed it with several coats of auto clearcoat. Still holds up to pressure washing.

Like Silverbullet I also used Testor's model paint (courtesy of CAS951). It was applied with a small brush and then clearcoated. Prep was done by washing with dawn dishsoap and then wetsanding (I forget the grit I used).

Turbo9441, Yes those 10 spoke BBS's are very nice, but in my opinion too modern for our cars. They were off of an '02 996 cabriolet. I got rid of them recently and changed to the more ubiquitous (and easier to clean) 993 cups which are more period correct and in my opinion better looking.

I bought mine at Parts Heaven in Hayward, CA, since they had it on the shelf. I'm sure you can get it cheaper on the internet but, if needed, you can always call Parts Heaven and they will ship it.

Good luck
