Exclamation Newbie 951 owner with major problem

I just replaced the altenator in my car after sitting for more than a year(Military life) and took the car out for a test drive. Drove pretty smooth I must say. Then I got on it for a second...Loud backfire...looked like a puff of smoke from under the hood...continued to drive home. When I slowed down for corners then pressed the gas, it stumbled really bad. Once in my driveway the car would not idle. RPM's below 500. Tried to restart car will not idle. Give it some gas, still stumbles really bad then shuts down. There are no leaks that I could see, and all the vaccume lines seem to be connected? Any and help would be great! Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to rennlist. Sorry you are having problems.

Could be a massive vacuum leak . I'd check the hose clamps holding the intercooler pipe hoses in place. Make sure they are all very tight. They frequently blow off under boost, especially if not really tight. Hope this is the problem.

If that's ok, I'd check that the timing belt is still properly aligned. www.clarks-garage.com has details on how to do that. Hope this isn't the problem.

If one of the intercooler tubes is off the car will not idle, if it only leaks it'll will do so badly and very rich.

I will third the vacuum leak theory. It is most likely one of the intercooler pipe connections or the hose at the throttle body.

Yep, I say IC pipe also. I have had the same thing happen numerous times, usually mine blew off so bad that the car shut off, and wouldn't start until the pipe was back on.

Also check the rubber hoses that hook to the manifold between the intake runners, I have had the metal pipe that sits inside the manifold that connects the hose and manifold blow out of there, and sometimes its still sitting in there making it appear its fine, but if you pull on it, its slides right out.

Thumbs up Wow!

I just have to say WOW! Seven replies that quick! Thank you! I will take a look at lunch today. Keep'em coming if you think it soething other than the IC pipes, or vaccum lines, just so I am better prepared. Once again thanks.

The exact same thing happened to me, and it was the IC hose connectors--one was loose and had popped off. ~2 minutes with a screwdriver fixed the problem and back on the road.

Talking Problem solved!

You guys are good! An intercooler boot popped off at the intercooler. Reinstalled, ensured all other claps were tight...runs like a champ! Once again thanks to all of you.
