Unhappy Damage at 7000rpm?

I accidentally hit 7000rpm in 3rd at WOT, I was looking at another car and continued to keep my foot flat for about 1 second at 7000rpm. The needle was bouncing off as far as it could go, the engine made a terrible straining noise . Do you think I did any damage? It is running fine, it sounds fine and everything under the hood looks fine. In fact I ran it hard after that but made sure I was paying attention to the rev limiter. I feel stupid, I have never done something like that before but I downshifted to 3rd(4500rpm) to get a good jump on a 2006 STI I was racing(on a closed course of course ). I did beat the STI easily on about 5 different runs after I had had my little . I have heard of people blowing engines this way, has anyone else here done this by mistake? I feel like @@$%^^ !!!
PS. Can I get a prize for the most smilies in a post?

did you hit the rev limiter, or did you not hit it and just kept going?

I think it just kept on going. I'm not sure it happened so fast.

I would not worry about it. But I would think about when the last time I changed my timing belt was.....

Heh, I hit slightly over 7500 rpm once in 5th gear. I wasn't looking at the speedo at the time. It's all good. They just don't like to live up there for a long time.

You're fine.

Timing belts where changed and retensioned recently.

The sound could be the engine hitting the revlimiter.

I would never take mine past 6000 rpm, maximum hp comes in at 5800-6000 so there is no need to hit the redline, specially with high mileage, it is very stressful on the rods...

Maybe on a stock car. Juan, I will admit to hitting the rev limiter a few times recently. I just forgot how fast the car was after not driving it for 2 years and then putting in tons of performance parts. Got on the thruway goosed it in second, smacked the limiter, whoops.

"Heh, I hit slightly over 7500 rpm once in 5th gear. I wasn't looking at the speedo at the time."

So you were about 170+mph??????

I've hit it only in 1st gear. And then get a good pop/backfire.

I was the same in regards to shifting at peak hp; no need to really go past that. but now with the big turbo it makes hp right up to and beyond redline

Slightly over. Worked out to 192mph if you look at the gearing/tire circumference. I'm not saying that it's accurate, all I know is that it was quite quick. The sad thing is that the car was still pulling at that rpm.

Believe what you want, I was there, it was fun. I'm not gonna do it again any time soon.

Where were you doing 192mph? R or T?

It was in 2000, and I was stupid/bored and wanted to see what it would actually do. This was right after a major service and the whole car was checked out from end to end. It was also at about 3 am on a moonlit summer morning. I was just finishing a trip back from Canada. I could see for miles, it was straight, and there were no cars in sight. Thankfully no state troopers either. I dropped it to 4th, and held it to the floor all the way through 5th. Yea, I was dumb, and no I don't ever plan on doing that again unless it's on a track with a full support crew and a race car. I got it up to speed (very quickly) watched the rev counter climb past 7500 rpm saw the speedo well off the scale past the 170 mph tick and then coasted down to more normal (less illegal, but still throw into jail speeds) for the rest of the trip. No, I don't have that car anymore, but I'm finishing the build on its replacement.

No, I don't condone it, no, I wasn't racing, I just wanted to see what it could do. It was actually quite boring (thankfully). Yes, I realize that if an animal walked out in front of me I wouldn't be here now. No, I don't plan on ever repeating it. Yes, I have been to DEs, unfortunately that was after this little test. I can see how these cars were meant to be driven on the autobahn, and I can say they do it very well. Yes, I've driven on the unrestricted autobahn also (in anemic rentals though).

Man, what I wouldn't give up to see an autobahn system put into place here in the States. I'd keep off the roads for the first few weeks/months to let everyone get used to the speeds and the rules of the road, but an American autobahn would be great! It would realistically compete with airlines on some routes!

Ok, I'm done. If you want to read more about irresponsible speeding (although I'm not sure what defines irresponsible) search for a thread here called something like "What's the fastest you've gone".

Hey I'm not here to judge you. I can't see how it could be described as boring though! The car must have had some pretty decent mods to get to that speed?
