Speaking of technology....I remember reading in Popular Mechanics several years ago about, I think it was Garrett, a company experimenting with an electric motor connected to the turbo to reduce/eliminate lag. Looks like it didn't pan out so far but sounds like a good idea.

I never use the -6.

I just got a job at Garrett, specifically in the VNT group. BorgWarner's "VGT" tech was copied from Garrett, where they originally used it on the Shelby CSX and currently on the VW/Audi TDi as well as lots of HUGE commercial/industrial diesel turbos. I'll be doing mostly larger diesel turbos, but there's a chance I might experiement with a VNT powered 951 in the next couple years.

Here's some more general info on variable geometry turbos...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variabl...y_turbocharger

However, the bit in that wiki about higher EGTs on gasoline cars being the reason you don't see them more often is wrong. The introduction of the technology was on a gasoline fueled car. The real reason is cost. A fixed geometry turbo can do the job well enough in most cases that OEMs won't justify the higher cost of the VNT flavor of turbos.

I'm moving out to Cali in a couple weeks, I can't wait!

I always heard the issue with VNT turbos was the vanes sticking...

Didn't chrysler have a VNT model car at one time? Shelby? Daytona? or something like that.

Anyone read-up on the new turbo Honda built -- its exhaust inlet changes over the rpm band to have a similar effect without quite as much hi-tech.

That is intresting Dan.

Do you know anything on the new Acura's Turbo system for the 2.3?.....I think it is a Garrett turbo

Congrats on the job. Garrett always sounded like an interesting place to work.

It appears Garrett makes all/most of their GT series turbos in VNT form now? That creates quite a good selection of turbos to try on a 951

Thanks Ian. At this point, you (and probably most other people) know more than I do about the Garrett lineup. I'm sure I'll learn it soon enough.

First, congrats on the job. Cali is way better than Detroit. Second, we all look forward to hearing all that you learn. What city are you going to live in?

The job is in Torrance, I'll probably look for a place in Redondo or Hermosa Beach. I just typed/printed the resignation letter. Nervous excitement!
