Default Purpose for timing belt cover breather hose?

The one that goes from the top of the belt cove to the airbox cover. Mine was missing and not capped when I got the car, so I ordered a new breather hose. Now I'm wondering why you would want to suck air out of there, it seems like it would just be more likely to suck dirt in it. Would it be for cooling? Any ideas?

It was "active" on early cars and plugged on the later cars.

You mean just a cap on the belt cover and cap on the airbox cover?

Funny, my '88 was routed to the airbox.

Hmm, 88 is pretty close to '89. Does anyone with an '89 have the tube?

Any explanation on why it was there in the first place, and why just capped on later cars?

Its purpose was to provide a "slight" vacuum in the belt cover area to suck up any belt particles and other junk that may accumulate in the belt covers. It's designed to deposit it on top of the air filter that way it can be cleaned upon filter change. It wasn't a very effective system so it was just capped off. I believe the change happened in mid 88.

I have an 88 made in 1989 and my car had the hose. I'm going to pick up the plugs at the dealer sometime soon.

Thanks Jeremy.

IanS- just curious, why are you capping yours?

I'm trying to decide if I should just use the hose now that I have it or cap them off.

I just left the hose pointing up when I went MAF. Some put a filter on the end of them for pretty/debris purposes....

is this hose the same as one from an N/A? i have an N/A hose from an 89. I pulled mine and left it open. Many came w/o them and are open but if you look down in the hole, they are molded closed inside of the tube.

From what I've read, porsche got rid of the hose, so I will to. If in doubt, I usually try to use any revisions Porsche makes over the years, figuring that they spent a lot more time thinking about it than I did. And it makes removing the airbox fairly annoying.

Here is the TSB from Porsche that deleted the breather. My 951 has been updated.
