If you do go with 6.5's in the rear, you can get the factory grills that were used in the 10 speaker option cars. I think they finish it off pretty nice...

IIRC they go for about $30 apiece new but used ones can be had fo much less...

i'd take the cubby hole covers, put a piece of luan between the carpet and the foam, and install 6 x 9 speakers.

the 6.5's are better than the 4 x 6 Oem's but the factory quarter panels muffle the sound. my front spakers are 4" mid range drivers with 1 " tweeter and quite frankly sound better beccause they are unobstructed.

for me.........i'd use the ones i have in the front, disconnect the factory, leave the stupid quarter panels in place since they are a pain to work with, and put bigger, better, clearer speakers in the rear.

Does anyone have any pics of the rear 10-speaker-system speaker covers? I've been searching through the forum for probably 30min now but haven't been able to find any pics of them yet (only a lot of broken links).

greg. is it the rear panels or just grills that fit to the stock 4-speaker system rear panels? If you are selling the panels, I will buy them. Can you shoot me some pics?

Just the speaker grills. I was going to convert my 4 speaker system to use these grills in back but they were backordered at Sunset and I ended up just mounting my tweeter in the panel w/o the grills.

Cutting the body just to fit some larger speakers leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I would choose many others ways first if it were me.

How are the larger grills going to look over the regular 4 speaker panels? I assume the picture in the other thread was of the full 10 speaker panels?

Funny that cutting a mere 1.5" crescent of thin sheet metal where it can't be seen would bother you but adding a Euro bumper and your extensive list of mods is OK? Where's the bad taste? I cut mine just last weekend for 6.5's. It took all of 5 minutes total and doesn't show with the adaptor plate padded and installed.

The only difference in the panels is that the 10 speaker system has cutout where the 4 speaker system just has the holes to form the grill for the rear speaker. You could cut 4 speaker panel and mount the new grill on the outside w/o too much trouble. I found some grill guides at Parts Express that I was going to use so that the grills could be taken on and off w/o having to pull the rear panel (and the 1/4 window!)

Not to pee on anyone's feet but as nice as those grills look there is one major set- back to keep in mind ...
When Porsche ( not really know for great sound systems ) put those grills in the car they were to function as actually holding directly behind the grills these ****ty( and I use the term very conservatively ) little speakers that rival only those in a old transistor radio ...
I was extremely disappointed, after I busted my ***, fitting in ADS S7's, that the actual hole, where one would mount the speaker in the body of the car, was very different than the location of that grill ( it misses by 4 inches ??? I really can't remember, as I did it over 15 yrs ago )
I even had to used an old rubber soap eraser, to space out the interior body panel that the grill attaches to, because the throw of the speaker would interfere with the speakers movement. I just wanted to let anyone know who may think that this is the end all, that it's really a poor design. In fact ironically it was kind of a step back, unlike all the other moves they made to the TS car (at the time I didn't feel it was as critical, because I was using it as a sub and Bass is supposed to be omin-directional?).
In fairness, I will say that the front set up was a step in the right direction, although the plastic mounting shell in the front doors has a lot to be desired ( to remedy this....Don't Laugh!
I filled mine with bondo. It made an incredible difference in the resonance.....

So I have a 86 and Im going tomorrow to buy speakers, I'd like to do the stock 4 by 6 in the front and go 6 and a half in the rear, What needs to be done? I don't mind trimming metal, I just would like them to fit behind the stock grills
